Union Workhouse Gloucester

An entry in the 1881 census shows that my great grandfather (with his wife and family) resided at a specific address in Gloucester.

On his death certificate it shows that he died in 1901 at the Union Workhouse, Gloucester.

When I researched the workhouse there is a list of occupants there during the 1881 census.  My great grandfather and his wife are both shown as being at the workhouse at the time of this census.

Can anyone offer any sort of explanation as to why they would feature in both entries - could this be an error or any other logical explanation would be greatly appreciated.

The specific address was just a house was it with the 2 of them as occupants or were they with other family?

Sometimes people did pop up in two places at once.  Maybe the date they entered the workhouse was very close to census night and they had already been counted elsewhere

The Gloucester address shows just the one family.  I was just surprised to find both of my great grandparents listed in two addresses.

My great grandfather died before the 1901 census - the address of his death being the workhouse.  The 1901 census shows my great grandmother living in a family home and not the workhouse.  All a bit confusing 

Is it possible that he was ill before he died (he died from a stroke) and was resident at the workhouse because of his illness?

Gloucester workhouse, like many, had an infirmary, probably the only access to medical care for most people.
It is possible that they were counted in both places on the same census for some reason.

Yes, that sounds like the most plausible explanation.
