Finningley - Poll Book Address Location - what does it mean?
« on: Sunday 06 March 22 15:01 GMT (UK) »
Hello All, in the 1836 register of electors in East Retford Poll Book an ancestor living in Finningley is described as being qualified to vote by having "House and Land" this is located in "Land in Field and Common" but does anybody know where this might be? Does it refer to a particular part of Finningley? Any help welcome. Thanks.

This map may, or may not, be of some help  :-\

Thanks Bumble B. I have had a good look at the maps at NLS but none have Finningley Common marked on them - unless I am looking in the wrong place - and that's quite possible :-)

from the Leeds Mercury - Friday 11 December 1925

Quote
HAMPERS.—One fowl, dozen farm eggs, 1 pound farm butter, 10s. Lynwood, Finningley Common, Doncaster

Lynwood can be found on Google maps, on Wroot Road to the NE of Finningley. Lynwood isn't shown on old maps so must be a 20th century house, but it seems to be just up the road from Finningley Grange Farm, which appears on old maps as simply Finningley Grange. So even though Finningley Common isn't marked on old maps, I think it was in this area.

There are also several Victorian newspaper descriptions of local fox hunts which mention Finningley Common and that are consistent with it being in this general area (i.e. to the NE of Finningley).
