I agree,  Tree Spirits find at Preston seems a great possibility, may I suggest a email to the Cemetery to confirm details.

I am wondering why parents decided on a Burial in Melbourne. Could it be that the family was related to the other fellow, Ralph Tofts, buried in the same plot at Preston.

A search on Ancestry (Australia, Newspaper Vital Notices, 1831-2001) could not find death/funeral notice for James in The Age newspaper.  I found the death/ funeral notices in The Age for Ralph, no mention of a Murphy family, however after a Requiem Mass at the Church burial at Preston Cemetery.

Cass

just checked BILLION GRAVES and there is a photo of the headstone at Preston Cemetery
Ralph L Tofts and JAMES A MURPHY, so I feel that you have found your shipmate

As a matter of interest and not really moving the search forward much.....

Ralph Leonard TOFTS was an immigrant departing from England 1956 and arriving  in Fremantle .
He was a bricklayer whose last address in UK was 7 Newton Rd Whittlesford Cambs heading for Melb.

He died in an accident. Notices were in The Age published 22 Dec 1964 and included mentions of his in-laws and wife and children.

His wife was Anita Mary nee OLDHAM ( died 2017) and his parents in law  were Alfred and Winifred (nee GERRARD) I think.  They were an English family and Alfred and Winifred married in Liverpool in 1940 (8b/543) with the birth of the daughter in Liverpool 1941 (8b/348)

The parents of Anita Mary TOFT were Alfred and Winifred ( nee GERRARD) OLDHAM and they came to Aust with their daughter  in 1953. Their last address had been 22 Barrington Rd. Liverpool.

The parents of Winifred also immigrated. They were Thomas and Sarah (nee DALY) GERRARD and they arrived in 1952.  Their last address had been 22 Barrington Rd. Liverpool.

When the birth of  James Alexander MURPHY was registered the index shows-

Births Mar 1954
MURPHY James A
Mother' Maiden Surname GERRARD
At Liverpool S.
10d   1069

In 1939 the GERRARD family- Thomas, Sarah, with daughters Esther, Bridget (annotated to MURPHY) and Winifred J (annotated to OLDHAM).

So Bridget was James A. MURPHY's mother and Thomas and Winifred GERRARD his grandparents.

Bridget GERRARD married in 1941 to Bernard G MURPHY. At Liverpool 8b/394
