Parents of John Ware, died 1826 in Maine
« on: Tuesday 08 March 22 18:09 GMT (UK) »
I'm wondering if someone who has access to subscription sources can offer any hints as to the parents of John Ware, who died on 26 February 1826 in Litchfield, Kennebec County, Maine.  I don't know where or exactly when he was born.  The History of Litchfield says he was 69 years old when he died, so he would have been born in about 1757.  It also says that he came to Litchfield before 1800 from Topsham, Maine.  Whether he was born in Topsham or had moved there from his place of birth is unknown

A major problem is the spelling of the surname.  His children, and in particular his son David [my ggg-grandfather], spelled it 'Waire' and referred to their father as 'John Waire.'  However, Topsham and Litchfield town records also refer to Ware, Wire, Wyer, Wair, Weir, Weire and Weare.  Later generations settled on 'Ware.'

Thanks, Gadget.  I had taken a look at him and written him off.  Maybe I've been too hasty, but there is a detailed tree with sources for this family at FamilySearch and it looks like this John Weare married in New Hampshire and stayed there.

My John Ware [Wire, Waire, etc.] married Mary Mallett in Topsham on 28 May 1780.  Mary Mallett's family lived in Topsham; her father had moved up there from Boston at some point.

There is also a huge bunch of Wares, many generations, down in Norfolk County, Massachusetts [south of Boston].  There were numerous Johns but none born around 1757.  And, as far as I can tell, no one in this clan moved up to Maine.

Not much, but here is what else I found.
The DAR says he was born in Massachusetts, 1757. But Maine was part of Massachusetts until 1820.
one descendant says Mary Mallet was born probably at Topsham, Maine.

https://services.dar.org/Public/DAR_Research/search_descendants/?action=list&MyPrimary_Seqn=492290&MyLineageCount=1
-----------
Most of his records at the DAR says about John Ware:
 Service:
MASSACHUSETTS    Rank(s): CORPORAL
Birth: 1757    MASSACHUSETTS
Death: 2-26-1826     LITCHFIELD LINCOLN CO MAINE
Service Source: MA SOLS & SAILS, VOL 16, P 389; VOL 17, P 655
Service Description:
1) CAPTS BENJAMIN LAMONT, ACTER PATTEN
2) COLS NATHANIEL WADE, JACOBS, MCCOBB

Residence
1) City: TOPSHAM - County: LINCOLN CO - District: ME DIST - State: MASSACHUSETTS
I guess that means his residence when in the army.
https://services.dar.org/Public/DAR_Research/search_member/?Action=full&National_Number=1014780

If you can find out where Capt Lamont, etc., put their units together, you might at least know where he was when he fought in the Revolution.

-------------
Index to Putnam's Historical Magazine
"Notes concerning the Weare families of Devonshire, Eng, and Mass, with arms, Volume 6, p 245
but clicking on the link for "245" does not take you there. I think it might take you to p 245 of whatever volume this index is included in.

https://www.google.com/books/edition/Putnam_s_Historical_Magazine/TYBbgZWmVLUC?hl=en&gbpv=1&dq=ware+family+of+topsham+maine&pg=PT2&printsec=frontcover

I don't know where you'd find that. I didn't Google the title of the magazine. It might show up.

-----------
Have you looked for Mallet family histories and then looked for a Mary marrying John Ware? Sometimes they will give the parents of a spouse.
