The Water Barracks, Kilkenny City
« on: Sunday 13 March 22 01:21 GMT (UK) »
Hi
Would anyone be able to tell me what the waterbarracks in St Canice were used for during the mid 1800's.  I have an ancestor who was a groom there for a Hugh O'Connor.  Is this a private residence or a barracks.
Regards
Lynne :)

Appears to be just a road
https://arcg.is/0TiaX5 Look at the Historic 25" map
Lots of houses along it in Griffith's Valuation.

Here’s Water Barrack (just above the Mill Pond) on the Historic 6" First Edition B&W (1829-1841). This is the earliest Ordnance Survey map.

Just for interest here's Water Barrack on the current OpenStreetMap for Kilkenny. it's in the townland of Gardens, in the civil parish of St Canice's.

Watching the program about the Phoenix Park tonight they said one of the gates used to have a barracks, perhaps Watergate once had a barracks and that's how the road got it's name.

Not marked on the 1777 Taylor and Skinner map though.https://www.swilson.info/tandsdets.php?pg=119

Just rereading this thread, you do realize the all caps typeface on this Water Barrack refers to the road not the buildings. Buildings typeface is different.
