Was he buried there or commemorated, Sandra?  I've check for deaths on Scotlands People but none of the J* M*cleods listed fit the information.

The nearest is a John Macleod, aged 29, died 1 Jan 1919. He was married and was a Fisjherman/Seaman, RNR. He died off Stornoway

There is also a listing of those who died 1 Jan 1919 and buried at Eye

I had seen that information as I commented on but the month and service number did not match.
Did see this entry with the date 2 Feb 1919 - supposedly died in Glasgow.

and this marine return for a death entry ??  Not sure of his age. Did originally put 27 years but don't know now where that came from so have removed until I see a confirmation.

John Macleod - aged 20 years - 1919 - A46/MR228

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

The gravestone said 27 years and 1 st Feb -that's where that came from.

But the photograph gives the 2 Feb date 1919 ?

Very strange.

The Marine Returns record is different from the info you have from the CWGC  Father was a William MacLeod.

The problem is that there are so many John Macleods in Wester Ross, I knew of at least 10 in the small community that I lived in.

Think I need to give them a ring tomorrow if I have time.
Thank you for the help. It is appreciated.
