Gaol time for my ancestor
« on: Monday 04 April 22 18:45 BST (UK) »
Hi, Coming up on an Ancestry search was gaol time for my ancestor. Am I correct in thinking that's an actual description of him and that he paid a fine rather than serve one month's hard labour??

Also can anyone find any more criminal records for him? Someone else on Anc has put one down on their tree for 1871 but their given source does not mention him? I am not finding their archives very easy to search at all.

Here's the 1847 record from Beds archives.

Ha!

Sorry!

Barnard TURNEY. born 1824. Tilsworth, Beds.

Think I've just found some more gaol stuff on FindMyPast but would love to know what the Beds Archive search (that I can't make out how to use) brings up if anyone knows how to use it pls?

On Find My Past there seems to be 5 separate crime entries for a Barnard Turney - but his birth year varies between 1821 and 1825.

None of his crimes are particularly serious - just seemed to have a habit of drunkeness!

(Sorry I can't help you with Bedfordshire Archives - normally with Archives you search the Catalogue - but I can't see his name come up just doing that.)
Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

nic - the Bedfordshire Petty Sessions AND the Bedfordshire Gaol Index are on Ancestry. I suspect you have picked up one of his records from one of those.

They are 2 separate data sets which you can find via the Card Catalogue. There are entries for him on each.

These may have been supplied to Ancestry by Bedfordshire Archives.
Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

There's a few more records which mention his name on the Beds Archives site.

Go to: https://bedsarchivescat.bedford.gov.uk/search/advanced
In the Person/institution field type Turney, B (with no quotes/speech marks)
Then click on the binoculars icon to the right of the name
This will open up a drop-down menu of various names
Click on Turney, Barnard from the list
Click on SEARCH button
This will return 55 results, some going back to the 16th century. The record dates aren't in order.
So scroll through each record for your 19th century Barnard Turney records.
Click on "Read more..." to see full details of the record

Here's one record example:

ReferenceQSR1851/1/5/2-3/a
Title Depositions of John Cooper, labourer of Stanbridge, Jane Tomkins, of Stanbridge, Barnard Turney, labourer of Tilsworth, and William Clough, police constable. In the case of Thomas Moss and Joseph Tompkins accused of stealing a rabbit.
Date free text 18 October 1850

Bernard Turney: on 14 September he saw the prisoner Moss in Tilsworth. Moss approached him and told him John Cooper had had his rabbit stolen and they thought it to be David Ellingham and Joe How. However, Moss went to to say the Joe How (which is the prisoner Joseph Tompkins) had taken the rabbit whilst he (Moss) had stood outside and that he would sell it to Turney. It was a brown and white buck rabbit. Turney said he wanted nothing to do with it and that Moss should be ashamed of himself. Moss told him John Cooper had plenty of money.
