John DOUGHTY and Mary GAMBLES
« on: Saturday 09 April 22 02:20 BST (UK) »
According to various trees online these two were married in Bolton in 1844. He was born in Warwickshire in 1811 and enlisted in the 65th Regiment of Foot in 1833.

I can find nothing on FreeBMD or Ancestry or FindMyPast relating to this marriage or the birth of their first child Sarah. The same trees have her birth in Bolton in 1844, but again nothing.

The 65th left Gravesend in September 1845 as guards on a convict ship heading to Tasmania, and from there they came to New Zealand. John took his discharge in NZ in 1849.

His discharge papers found on FindMyPast said he was in South America for a few years as well, which would have been prior to 1845 so its possible he was married there.

Hoping someone can assist.

Thanks
Ian C

His Chelsea pension records are on ancestry but I no longer have a sub to Fold 3 to see the details they usually mention children and spouse and where they were married.

His initial pension gives his birth as Bishoptatesbrook Warwick, and again when it was examined 18 Feb. 1873

If I have the right man his number was 1012.

Hopefully someone has a sub.

There are two John Doughtys baptised around the right time - England Select Births and Christenings.

Bishops Tachbrook
1) John Doughty
Baptised: 5th January 1812
Parents Thos. and Elizabeth

2) John Doughty
Baptised: 30th July 1815
Parents John and Ann

The second one is still with his parents in 1841

John seems to be their eldest son others were Joseph, William and Edward.

There are earlier records there for the name Doughty on Ancestry.

Hi

I do think his Discharge states he spent time in North America, not South. "North" was my first impression - also The "N" is quite different from the "S" is six above.

His Service records gives his trade as "Shoemaker", He attested at Warwick on 23 Feb 1833 at the age of 21 years & 2 months.

Cheers

I have just posted this on your NZ thread - here for information of others.

I see several trees show Sarah as born Mullingar, Ireland.

There is a marriage here - indexed as
May 18th 1844
Mary Gambols and John ‘Ponte’. Looking at the original it could read ‘Doute’.

There are several newspaper snippets which place 65th Regiment in Mullingar at this time. Is there anything in John’s military record to verify this?

I can’t see a baptism though for Sarah.

I think you might have cracked the case , heywood!   6 couples down from John Doute ( as I agree, it looks like)  and Mary Gambols - Sergeant John ?Donelly of the 65th Regiment is getting wed :-)  and next but one after him, so is Charles Robinson of the 65th, whose witness is Michael Ennis of the 65th.

Nothing I can see in his Military Record, but per my experience ( have an Warwickshire Ancestor in Army similar time who spent periods in Ireland)   I wouldn't expect it to - as Ireland was part of "Home" lands, and only service abroad is separated out.  The official published tomes "Distribution of the British Army" places the 65th in Mullingar as at 1 Jan 1844.
