Crimeens in Wicklow
« on: Thursday 14 April 22 13:22 BST (UK) »
This is my first time posting in Ireland. I live in South Australia. I really have no clue how to find out things in Ireland.
My triple great grandmother Mary Crimeen emigrated from Ireland to South Australia by 1854; probably in 1851 on the ship Hydaspes. There are many variations on the spelling of her surname (Cremins on her marriage registration in South Australia) but many of her descendants have "Crimeen" somewhere in their given names.
Her sister Sarah Crimeen died in South Australia in 1911. In her will she left money to all of Mary's children and also to "my sister Eliza O'Brien of The Copse County Wicklow in Ireland". In her will Sarah referred to all her married female beneficiaries by their married surname.
Sarah had another sister Bridget Crimeen who died in South Australia in 1906.
From their ages at their dates of death, Sarah was born c1840, Bridget c1834, and Mary c1836. So presumably Eliza was born in a related time range.
Andrew Crimeen born c1824 and Elizabeth Crimeen born c1820 who emigrated on the same ship are siblings of each other and related in some unspecified way (they are buried in the same plot as Bridget and Sarah).
My question is: Can anybody find out anything about this family in Ireland? I am thinking that the best lead is "my sister Eliza O'Brien of The Copse County Wicklow".
Thank you for any help you are able to provide.

Hello
Let's give it a go
1901 census The Copse Ballinderry  Wicklow
Edward O'Brien  61 PO pensioner born Wicklow
Eliza 57 born Wicklow
both roman catholic

1911 they are still there aged 73 and 71
He's a farmer

Looks like a marriage Mar 1887 to an Edward brien at Rathdrum
And yes would you believe my time on the Library Computer has run out so can't check it out.

I think you've got it! It all hangs together. Thank you ciderdrinker and Sinaan, and the geographic context info is interesting as well Kiltaglassan. It's amazing, especially with the time difference. I wrote the query at bedtime and woke up to the answers.

Is it possible get any more information about James Crimeen? Such as burial information or info about his wife and children? It looks very much as if James is a direct ancestor of mine. One thing I'd be particularly interested in is birth or christening info for my ancestor Mary, born c1834, who was presumably his daughter.

Yes, they were Catholic. Would there be a local Catholic church that kept parishioner records, or had a graveyard with headstones?

I am in the process of moving house so cannot properly process everything at the moment. But there is something I am curious about, which is the pronunciation of Crimeen. I realize this is difficult to answer without a voice recording. Would it be anything like Crimean as in the Crimean War?

Not sure if this fits but figured i’d add it.

James dies in 1879 and on his death cert he is a widower.

There is two Crimeen women who die in Rathdrum before 1879.

Mary Crimeen died 1867 age 92 (!)
https://www.rootschat.com/links/01rgy/

and Catherine Crimeen died 1869 age 55
https://www.rootschat.com/links/01rgz/

(pre-1871 death certs have to be ordered and cannot be viewed online, a fairly simple process as it can be digital)

Catherine may have been James’ wife and Mary could possibly be his mother.

James being born c1803 and Mary being born c1773 it could well work.

rían  :)
