Looking for Mary Ann Denny's mother
« on: Saturday 16 April 22 09:41 BST (UK) »
Joseph William Emsley was born in 1886 in Marylebone, his mother's maiden name is Denny. He appears with siblings and parents (Richard and Mary Ann) on 1891 census age 4.
piece 104, Folio 56, page 63

Mary Ann (nee Denny) is aged 30 (b abt 1861) born Paddington.
The oldest child Richard James Emsley's birth was registered Q4 1877, so the marriage on 30 July 1877 of Richard Emsley and Mary Anne Deaner (sic) at Willesden seems the most likely. Mary Ann claims to be 18, and says her father's name is Austin Deaner (labourer). The marriage record is on Ancestry and although Mary Ann signed it is impossible to read the surname, It looks like she's signed her maiden name and overwritten with Emsley or vice versa.

The only Austin Denny I can find in right sort of area and appropriate age is the son of John and Mary and is sometimes Daniher rather than Denny.

1861 census:  Piece 76, Folio 48, Page 32
1871 census: Piece 93, Folio 53, Page 26

In 1861 he is unmarried, in 1871 he is married but no sign of his wife in the household, nor Mary Ann who would be around 9 - 10.

The only likely marriage I can find is in 1868 in
Marylebone district is of Austin Daniher to either Caroline Hilton or Elizabeth Emma Seymour.

In 1881 there is an Austin Denny with wife Eliza,
Piece  88, Folio 79, Page 39

and an Austin with wife Caroline and daughter Annie b abt 1872
Piece 161, Folio 45, Page 6

or is it one Austin with two households?

Can anyone find Mary Ann in 1871 and identify her mother, please

Yes those 1881 entries have lots of similarities for Austin.  Not a common name either.

There is also an Austin Denny entry on criminal register for 1866.

Iwas also just about to post the birth registration of Annie Matilda DENNEY mmn HILTON  :D

There is also a newspaper item about the 1866 conviction

"Austin Denny, 20 was indicted for assaulting Thoas Weal, a constable of the metropolitan police force, in the execution of his duty.
The prisoner pleaded guilty to the indictment, and a previous conviction being proved against him, he was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment with hard labour."

The only census I definitely have Mary Ann on (as M A Emsley) are 1881 and 1891. In 1881 no place of birth given, in 1891 it is given as Paddington, which makes it Kensington reg district. The only Mary Ann Hilton reg in Kensington around that time is in 1863, but mother's maiden name is Smith.

Might be her in  1871, Caroline Denny (married) with Mary Ann and Matilda.
Caroline is born in Paddington and Mary Ann in Marylebone. M A is aged 11 (b abt 1860)

Lodger with Eaton family. Austin not there because he's with his parents.

Matilda is reg as Matilda Denny Hilton in Q2 1866 on GRO with no mother's maiden name, so that fits with Austen marrying Caroline in 1868.
I'm now beginning to doubt whether Mary Ann is really Austen's daughter, but the product of an earlier relationship Caroline had.

This Austin Denny would be about 10 years too young, but the newspaper may have made a mistake. He would be out of circulation when Matilda was born.
