Thanks again for kindly helping me to fill in some more detail on this York TH. I'll definitely be ordering up the death certificate. Looking carefully through FreeBMD deaths, I can't find another that is so close to what I know of my grandmother's brother, particularly his age. I'm clearing my desk so that tomorrow I can make a start of looking into the possibility that he may have emigrated some time in the mid 1920s.

Interestingly, his son James F Horsfall, (18-yr-old Joiner of Ann's Terrace, Darlington) departed the UK aboard the EURIPIDES on 16 July 1926, destination Brisbane, Queensland ... where he spent the rest of his life, though there may have been a trip home to the UK

Here's the vaccination register entry for Tom Horsfall born 31 May 1880 in York
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSDP-H3DK-Z

Appears to be the man Carole found in York in 1939. Free index gives address as 18 Osbaldwick Lane.
I wouldn't think it would be a good idea to purchase that 1941 death cert.

Just a thought.  If he was in so much bother - he may have "altered" his name.  Do you happen to know his exact birthdate?

EDIT

Forget that - he would have still had to be alive in 1969 for his full birthdate to be on a death reg

I knew the date of Clara's burial, but this record of her will is new to me. Does the Probate Register refer to her as the wife of Tom Horsfall? I've just googled the names you kindly sent, and found a mention (in a site called Tom's Wills) to Leslie Richard Rowland. And no mention of Clara's children, James and Rowena ...

Hi
Yes, it says that in the calendar. It suggests that as far as was known, Tom was around somewhere!
The other two names are the executors.
For the full contents of the will, you can get it, should you wish, for just £1.50. First  though, you have to find Clara in their new search (may not be easy!)

Perhaps in those patriarchal days, a woman who was not a widow was obliged to have her identity linked to her husband, whether they were together or not. I'll try the probate search as you suggest.
