Tracing family 1930-50
« on: Wednesday 20 April 22 14:11 BST (UK) »
Any suggestions how best to trace addresses where my family stayed in Douglas pre war & late 40s early 50s?
I'm plan to be on the IOM next week, know about Manx
BMD and newspaper archives. Are there any ways to research hotels in Douglas & Ramsey. Any street   or Directories Any suggestions welcomed.

Presume you have the actual addresses?  If not - how do you hope to trace them? Electoral registers for that period are not indexed by name - only address

Are we talking about them actually living there or just visiting?  Your post says “stayed” not “lived”

Why would they be in the newspapers?

You mention BMD - did they have children in the IoM

If they were there in 1939 - have you looked for them on the 1939 register

CaroleW, thanks for your comments. I'm attempting to find the places where my family stayed whilst on holiday from Liverpool.
I know about Visitor Lists in Victorian Newspapers but dont know how far those continued.
I had found 2 Street Business Directories for Douglas around 1890's but no later ones.
I had been told the 1939 Register records for IOM had been lost, If tjhats not the case would I be able to find 1939 records at the Museum in Douglas together with Voters List coveing late 1930 thru to early 19550's
Thanks again for your ideas.

If they were only there on holiday - why would they be on a voters list or in a business directory?

The Victorian era ended in 1901 so I am assuming that is where they covered to.

The Henry Bloom Noble Library, in Douglas, has lots of street directories, hotels & guest Houses lists, and tourist guides.

They are downstairs in the Reference Section.
