Ellen Helen Brannigan, born 1817 Ireland, possibly County Monaghan
« on: Monday 25 April 22 01:43 BST (UK) »
I am searching for any Irish records of my 2nd Great Grandmother, Ellen or Helen Brannigan.

Ellen moved to Scotland and in 1834 at Port Glasgow she married my 2nd Great Grandfather Thomas Appleton, born in Burtonwood, Warrington, Lancashire, in 1805. The next mention of Ellen is in the 1841 Scottish census.  She is living with her family in Macs Close, Glasgow, with her brother Peter Brannigan and his family.  But Thomas is found in the Burtonwood census with his parents.  Ellen’s brother Peter has moved to New York in 1850.  In the 1851 census, all of the Appleton family have settled in my home town, Sunderland, then County Durham, England.

I am trying to find any early records of Ellen, sometimes referred  to as Helen, Brannigan.  She may well have been born/raised in County Monaghan, Ireland.  Any help would be very much appreciated.

Can you please identify your APPLETONs in Sunderland, 1851 England Census.

I appreciate your help; however, I have done extensive research into the Appleton’s in Sunderland.  I really want any early records of Ellen Helen Brannigan from Ireland, and before her marriage to Thomas Appleton.  Thanks! 😀

It is difficult as her birthplace on the censuses is not consistent with your request.
Do you have her born Ireland or Monaghan anywhere other than 1841?

1841 - I can only see a transcript - born Ireland
1851- born Scotland
1861- born Scotland
1871 - born Scotland

Unhappily, no more attached to her name; however, I have County Monaghan, Ireland on one of her nephews US census.  That’s why I stated ‘possibly from County Monaghan’.  Thank you for trying!  😀

Have you found anything about Peter Brannigan?
Or looked for any others around the same place?

I think some trees show him married to Mary Malone but I think I saw a marriage of PB to Mary Smith around the same time in Glasgow.

**added - sorry that marriage was in Paisley

Which nephew shows Monaghan in US?

Do you have witness names for Ellen’s marriage?

I assume that the reason for wivenhoe's request (reply #1) + posting census information (reply #2) about the Appleton family in Sunderland is so that we can all see the same information.
Helpers may notice notice something or make a connection that a person who posted the request has missed.
As heywood mentioned, information provided by Ellen about her birthplace was inconsistent.

Who else was with Ellen on 1841 census? Did the household include either of her parents & other siblings?
Was the nephew in U.S. Peter's son? Have you found Peter on U.S. censuses? What do you know about Peter? Was he older or younger than Ellen?
Do you know Ellen's religious denomination ?
The only Irish record which may have existed for Ellen would have been baptism.
(Great minds, heywood. :)) )
