Dudley Anderson descendants
« on: Thursday 28 April 22 17:17 BST (UK) »
Are there obituaries for any of these people? I'm looking for descendants of Evelyn (Carroll) Meader. I don't think she had children but want to look further.

her father:
William Dudley Anderson, aka, Robert "Bobbie" Carroll,
born April 23, 1867, Richmond VA
died March 19, 1932, in Chicago.
[his obituary, if there was one, should be interesting]

herself:
Evelyn (Carroll) Meader, b 24 August 1904, d 14 March 1936, Chicago, wife of Arthur J Meader.

her husband:
Kankakee County, Illinois Death Index, 1870-1992
Name:   Arthur J Meader
Death Date:   30 Apr 1974
spouse of Jessie Cuperus.

I've seen Arthur Meader's 1940 Census with no children in the household.

I'm still working on Evelyn's mother, Sarah Jacobs aka Lillie Birchfield.
I have her marriage in 1901 in Bell County, Texas, to W D Anderson, in 1920 with Robert Carroll, and in 1930 with Arthur and Evelyn Meader, but nothing else.

Sarah Jacobs and Dudley Anderson were actors/performers. Bobbie Carroll and Lily Birchfield were their stage names.

I think it was on the 1920 census that Sarah’s birth was recorded as London England. I believe Sarah’s daughter’s death record showed Sarah’s birthplace as London, England.

I found Sarah’s death certificate. I am finding the writing on Sarah’s certificate difficult to read, but some of the details:
Name, Sarah Anderson
Born Apr 12, 1876, London, England
Retired
Father’s name Wm(?) Jacobs, born Russia.  Unknown for mother.
Place of death: Township, Calumet(?), Gary, Indiana
Date of death Aug 2, 1938
Cause of death, appears to be heart related
Widowed, husband, Robert Anderson
Informant, A. J. Meader
Ellison: Co. Wicklow/Canada       Fowley: Sligo/Canada       Furnival: Lancashire/Canada       Ibbotson: Sheffield/Canada       Lee/DeJongh: Lancashire & Cheshire       Mumford: Essex/Canada       Ovens: Ireland/Canada       Sarge: Yorkshire/Canada             Stuart: Sligo/Canada       Sullivan: Co. Clare/Canada      Vaus: Sussex/Surrey      Wakefield: Tuam or Ballinasloe, Ireland              (Surname: Originated/Place Last Lived)  (Canadians lived in Ontario)

Thank you very much. Maybe I can start filling in the gaps for Sarah.

You’re welcome.  I’ve been searching for Sarah, Evelyn and William/Robert.  They are being elusive.

Perhaps it was a nickname or a mistake, but Evelyn (in 1920) was recorded as Eva (I believe).

So far, I have not been able to find Sarah arriving in North America, in 1900, etc.  Perhaps Jacobs was not Sarah’s actual birth name (could it have been shortened from a more Russian sounding name?).  Her immigration dates, from the census returns, were 1890/1892.  She would have been fairly young to travel on her own.

Did this man have an obituary? I didn't find one in the Cleveland Public Library's News and Necrology File, so I am not too hopeful.

Patrick Kelly
died Cleveland, Ohio, March 31, 1887, at a hospital, of an accident
married, age 30y 3m, born in Ireland, laborer, parents Michael and Mary
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F6VP-G86

he is not the Pat Kelley, stagehand, who died of typhus December 16, 1887 in Cleveland. That man was single.
----------
I'm looking for a Pat Kelly who died between 1885 and 1887. The family always said 1887. He is said to have been 'a ballplayer who died when he was hit in the head by a thrown ball.'
His wife, Mary Rodgers, was from Cleveland, their child Patrick was born at her mother's home in Dec 1885. The record said both parents lived at that address, but there is no record of them having done so. And if he was a ball player, he could have died anywhere, I suppose. Patrick Sr was probably born in Tennessee, maybe Nashville.

*** edited to add: I have seen the 1886 Cleveland City Directory listing of a Patrick Kelley, catcher, living at 2274 Fayette.
That might be him. He is not there the year before or after, and the street is in the right neighborhood. But I have a feeling that "catcher" refers to a job in the nearby mills, maybe "catching" the finished product and bundling it for the warehouse or shipping.
***

He is not:
Patrick Kelly, died about 1887 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. that man was born abt 1841 in Ireland and worked on the railroad

He is not
Patrick Kelly, d Nashville, 15 Sep 1885, that man was single.
-----------
and @ Lisa in California. I didn't find anything either on Sarah Jacobs/Lillian Birchfield, or Eva (Carroll) Meader.

-----------
newspapers.com's free weekend helped me find enough on the actor Bobby Carroll to identify Mary Rodgers' stage name as Minnie Kelly. That led me to her death, as "Minnie Kelly" in Butte, MT, Nov 11, 1897. Having looked for her off and on for 21 years, I was very happy to find her death and burial. The family had the location exactly right and the year off by one, but I'd never have found her as Rodgers, Kelly, or Anderson.

for anyone interested, and for future searchers who land here, this is the, as of now, finished product:
https://myoldohiohome.com/articles/mary-rodgers-kelly-anderson-of-cleveland-ohio.html

-----------

How this all fits together: When Pat Kelly died, Mary Rodgers married William Dudley Anderson.
