GEORGE JOHNSTON, 1799-1880, parents
« on: Friday 29 April 22 16:16 BST (UK) »
Hi!

I am trying to know who are the parents of George Johnston, b. 1799, d. 1880, married to Elizabeth Morgan, b. 1816, d. 1895.
Sons: John Octavius Johnston, William Bruce Johnston, Charles Francis Harding Johnston and others...

I understand the possible parents are William Johnston and Isobel Reid, but I am having a hard time trying to know who they are and expanding the research.

Thank you!

Welcome to RootsChat!

The first question is where did George die?

If he died in Scotland you can get his death certificate at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk for a small fee (less than the cost of a cup of coffee) and it will tell you the names of his parents.

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Thank you!

I think George actually died in England. How to procedure then? There is any way I can order this?

Just for info really. Scotlandspeople site would indicate that George was born in Banff in 1799 to William Johnston & Isabel Reid.

He married Elizabeth Morgan born 2.7.1815 Barnstable the daughter of James Gordon Morgan.
They were married with the consent of her father on the 25th January 1833 in Dover, the Morgan's being based in Calais France at the time. Elizabeth would have been aged seventeen and half. there is a newspaper article announcing the marriage dated 7.3.1833

Having found him in various censuses in Barnstaple, I see that he is described as BD (Bachelor of Divinity). So he studied for a degree at one of the Scottish universities. If he was born in the couny of Banff, the chances are that he attended the University of Aberdeen. In which case it would probably be worth consulting the Roll of Graduates for confirmation of his parentage.

Forfarian, his ordination 31.9.1839 suggests he studied at Christ's college Cambridge.

When he was awarded his B.D. degree from Cambridge in 1839 he was already headmaster of Barnstaple Grammar School.

His name appears in the list of M.A. graduates from King's College, Aberdeen, in March 1819. He is from Banff(/shire), but unfortunately the entry does not mention his parents. The footnote does refer to his B.D. and being at Barnstaple.

London Evening Standard 10-2-1880:

JOHNSTON, - Feb. 7, at Kidlington, near Oxford, the Rev.
George Johnston, B.D., late vicar of Whitchurch, S. Devon,
and formerly of Barnstaple, N. Devon, aged 81.

Other newspapers add details about him having been headmaster at Barnstaple and dying at the residence of his son, Rev. J. O. Johnston.
