1921 Census Struggle
« on: Tuesday 03 May 22 09:16 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I’d taken a break from searching but have come back to it now the 1921 census is out, but I’m really struggling.

Out of either side I’m searching the one I thought would be easiest I can’t find any of them anywhere. I’d be grateful for any help (fresh eyes may be required!) or I’ve just genuinely lost my touch.

It’s the Hermitage family I’m looking for William Henry Hermitage (1865) & Sarah Emily Hermitage (nee Collins) (1862) and particularly there daughter Grace Emily who married George Herbert Iley in 1919. I’ve tried searching all name variants.

Thank you.

Per the 1921 voters list, William Henry and Sarah Emily Hermitage were resident at 243 Acton Lane, Acton (same as the address on Grace's 1919 marriage record)

Searching the 1921 census for that address gets this hit: " William Henry, Emily Sarah, Alice Millison and 3 others are on this record"

On Ancestry :
The 19 11 census has the following family:-
William Henry Hermitage 46
Sarah Emily Hermitage 45
William Henry Hermitage 17
Daisy Ellen Hermitage 15
Alice Willison Hermitage 12
Violet Mabel Hermitage 11
Gladys Ethel Hermitage 5
Harold Edward Hermitage 9
William Alfred Terry 29

The 1901 has :-
William H Hermitage 36
Sarah E Hermitage 35
Grace E Hermitage 9
May K Hermitage 8
William H Hermitage 6
Daisy E Hermitage 5
Alice M Hermitage 2
Violet M Hermitage 1
Rose S Collins 32

So it looks like Grace left home between these two census, possibly for work.

Her marriage seems to be
https://www.ancestry.com/discoveryui-content/view/7422506:1623 though the surname of George Iley could be mistaken for Hay. (Worth bearing in mind for other searches).

Marriage allegation here
https://www.ancestry.com/discoveryui-content/view/707470:2056

Grace seems to have died 26 Nov 1975 at Oadby Leicstershire, Probate date 19 Jan 1976, Nottingham.

In 1924 George & Emily were living in Acton

Still there in 1925.

Still there in 1952 with Kenneth Iley (Possible son?)

Cheers
Guy

PS I have just done something I always warn against and looked for people's trees on Ancestry and it seems that "Grace Emily Hermitage found in 32 public trees" I have not checked to see if this is the correct Grace.
If you do look at them be very careful and check any clues given, regards Guy

The 1920-23 voters lists have George Herbert Iley resident at 10 Askew Crescent, Hammersmith, By 1924 he is at 12 St Albans Avenue, Acton, and Grace is listed too. But they don't seem to be at either address in the 1921 census.

The surname is transcribed as Herritage.
If you do an advanced search, just enter
Parish   Acton & other household member  William Henry Herritage, you will get them all.

Looks like the Ileys have been transcribed as Hey. In Chiswick.

Thank you all so much! I’ve found those now, although I’d never have thought to try Hey instead of Iley, so much for thinking they’d be easier to find over Wards/Wilson’s, guess that’s what makes searching so much fun.

I’ve found out so much about this particular part of my tree over the years it’s nice to add a bit more to it, thanks again all of you.
