I don’t think you can assume James Leggatt BARR is your James BARR without some other clue. The most obvious being his marriage cert, if he says his father is David then you would have more justification.  Otherwise it is pure supposition based on age and place of birth.

There are 23 James Barr births in Lanarkshire 1862-1864

Dang it, you are right it maybe another James Barr. It could be this James but could be another.
If I do get the marriage record though I don`t know if one or more of the Other James Barr have a father named David as well.
It took me a year to Find my great grandfather, their son George Arthur Barr. I had a similar issue since he abandoned his wife and Daughter. I actually Found a record of my grandmother`s in my Grandfathers Desk. That desk was flow across the world to where I live after they died. In the desk I found document With George Arthur Barr military number on it. That number led me to another document with his date and location of birth plus my great grandmother`s name on it. Before that I had narrowed a dozen or so people of the same name down to 4 possible George Arthur Barr. The birth info matched one of the 4 perfectly. So I got him. Now I have to go onto his father.

great find
George Arthur Barr was my biological Great grandfather. I knew his siblings but did not have the baptism record for any of them until you found it.

How did you get that PDF ?
and how on earth did you find them in it? it took me a couple minutes even though you told me exactly where they were.

I know upto Susan and James on my tree is right

I'm pleased that the links worked. Cityark is a free service but I found them through FindMyPast. They have the transcriptions only but each entry gives a link to the PDF and helpfully gives the page to scroll to.

so I looked at the 1911 census it says my James Barr was born in
Lanark co. Glasgow.

does this help anyone narrow it down?

I have no Idea how the county / Parish system works in the UK.
Does this help narrow it down?

it also states that him and Susan have completed 14 years of marriage so 1897-ish marriage

As for the family search it narrows it down to 16 James Barr's

Not forgetting that in 1901 it says born Perth, Scotland.   :)

I cannot remember now if you established what it says in 1921.

I still think you need to buy Susannah and James marriage cert to identify his father’s name and occupation.
I appreciate you are trying not to spend money, but the direct ancestor line is the one in which you really do need to at some point.
