In the 1880s in Co Derry sometimes there were funeral cards delivered to people advising of the burial etc.  We have a couple of these.

The oldest one we have is from 1840s (handwritten) but the custom continued, at least in rural areas, until the 1930s. Have just been given the loan of a huge box of them to copy and one of the first ones I saw was for my great-grandmother's sister who died in 1901. The good thing, since it was by way of an invitation to the funeral, is that place of burial almost always listed which you don't get on a death certificate.

Wow a whole box!  Are they all from Derry?  What a treasure trove and what bliss to record them.

Sorry I did not mean to be inferring that the practice was only in the 1880s...just that the ones that turned up for our family here in  NZ were from 1880s.

I have written to FindmyPast, requesting a copy of Eliza Jane's writeup on Page 7 of the Derry Journal on Apr 11, 1881.

Find My Past is a pay site  ???
I saw on the site that you could order items for 50 pence.

We live & learn, is it possible to give us a link to that statement please?

Annie

Add...Not sure what I did but my post is in the wrong place i.e. I have highlighted it  ???

I clicked on the link that KG sent in reply #10, and it took me to the subscription page. If you scroll to the bottom, it said Commitment Shy? Buy the record on its own. When I clicked on that, it said 50 pence. So I paid 50 pence.

Derry Journal, 11 Apr.1881 - death notice and writeup on her death available on Find My Past.

Using the link at Reply #10...
The death notice doesn't give a name, only "Mrs Lennox wife of Samuel J Lennox"

I asked for the writeup on Page 7, which also refers to Mrs. Lennox, wife of Samuel J. Lennox. Headline is Sudden Death at the Waterside.

Samuel Lennox's wife was Eliza Jane Nutt - born at Gortnaskea, Bondsglen - November 1840.  Father John Nutt (1809-1876) a blacksmith.  Mother Mary Ann Hannah(1819-1871)

John and Mary Ann had 11 children (that I've found).  Sometime between 1846 and 1848 they moved to Claudy.

Eliza was married to Connolly Blair first - he died in 1865 - and she married Samuel Lennox in 1866.

This is great information, They Search for us. Thank you so very, very much. I have the marriage of Samuel's parents (John Lennox and Sarah Jane Latimer) Apr 24, 1834 at Moneymore First Presbyterian on Meeting House Street although I am lacking the parents of each of John and Sarah Jane. John was born abt 1808, almost certainly in  Cranny and his father is believed to be James with a possible wife Ann Dick, as per online info. As for Sarah Jane, I don't have any parents for her but the first daughter was Sarah Jane and second son was the abovementioned Samuel, if they happened to follow the naming pattern. I must say there is a gap between first son Matthew (who should be James if they followed the naming pattern) in 1837 and Samuel in 1841 so there could be another son born in there. Sarah Jane Latimer was born abt 1816. Maybe Moneymore since the marriage was there. I really don't know. But thanks again for your help.
