Hi aghadowey and thank you. I did find her death record but not a writeup. Perhaps I don't have access to the writeup.

Peggy,

If you have the subscription, the death notice was on page 1 of the Derry Journal, 11 Apr.1881 edition. The write-up was on page 7 (bottom right corner).

I tried but I guess I don’t have access. Put in appropriate filters of Londonderry, Londonderry and Derry Journal and date of writeup. Scrolled through 148 articles.

Yes, I saw on the site that you could order items for 50 pence. Hope that includes newspaper articles. Hope they still do that.

Hello, I did get the writeup of Eliza Jane Lennox, nee Nutt, published in  the Derry Journal of Apr 11, 1881. Has details of her death but not family information, other than to mention her husband Samuel.

Often in those days all you got was the death notice in the paper and this could be as short or long as the info provided to the publishers of the paper.  Sometimes notable people (in their community) got an obituary, writeup about how long they had been there, family, etc etc.  I have to say it would be more likely to be the grocer than the grocer's wife who had an obituary written about them (unless she came from an old family - the Nutt/McNutt family were an old family.

In the 1880s in Co Derry sometimes there were funeral cards delivered to people advising of the burial etc.  We have a couple of these.

So not all people had a death notice in the paper, even fewer people had an obituary written about them printed in the paper.  Looking back now sometimes all we find is a copy of the official death certificate.

The oldest one we have is from 1840s (handwritten) but the custom continued, at least in rural areas, until the 1930s. Have just been given the loan of a huge box of them to copy and one of the first ones I saw was for my great-grandmother's sister who died in 1901. The good thing, since it was by way of an invitation to the funeral, is that place of burial almost always listed which you don't get on a death certificate.
