FTM 2006 problem with .ftw file
« on: Friday 06 May 22 10:24 BST (UK) »
Hi,
Hoping someone can help. I have my family tree on an old laptop on FTM 2006 and I want to move it to another program away from FTM. The FTM version I have does not export to a gedcom file so all I have is the ftw. Looking on the internet I thought that rootsmagic would let me upload the file but after downloading rootsmagic 8 essentials I get and error saying “ is an invalid integer when importing the file.
Any suggestions on how to fix this?
I don’t really want to spend money on later versions of FTM or another program to find I have to key it all in again

Thanks in anticipation
Gill

I'm surprised that such a new  ;D version of FTM doesn't have the facility to export as Gedcom. I am using FTM for Windows 95 , born about 1999. I have exported Gedcoms successfully andopened them in Rootsmagic and Family Historian.
On my version, on the File menu there is "Copy/Export Family File". When I click that, a box opens where I can select file type. I can also change the name and the folder where I want to save it.

I have rootsmagic 7 essentials (2015)
It says it should import direct from FTM  2006 and earlier. Just tried it with a small tree and it worked. My main tree hung and I got bored and cancelled it. but I think that could be the  laptop not the programme.

Thanks Lizzie,
Unfortunately the FTM version I have doesn’t let you export it :(
The only version of rootsmagic I could get was 8 and it throws up an error when importing the .ftw file.
I’ll have a play around and see if I can get it to work on a smaller version of my tree

Have you tried...

Open FTM and at the top of the screen where you have FILE, VIEW, EDIT etc.
open FILE & select copy/export and then select file type and change it from FTW (*.ftw) to GEDCOM (*.ged).

Does this work?

Jim

PS You could ask at Rootsmagic they are very accomodating.

Unfortunately the FTM version I have doesn’t let you export it

That suggests you may have FTM2006 SE (starter edition) which doesn't have all the functions. Look in "About" on the Help menu which will show if that is the case.
Perhaps someone with the full version or a more recent one could open your file and convert it for you.

I do have the starter edition- I’d be so grateful if some kind soul could take my ftw and convert it to a gedcom 😊
