Rockville home for destitute children 1901

I'd love to know more about the two elderly ladies living at this home and if they are related to the matron Mary GLEN or any of the children

I expect anyone who grew up here would remember someone brine 119 years old !

I.Googled Rockvale school
Glasgow herald Dec 8th states

It was built in 1882 and supposed to house 40 children Boys and girls

Under superintendence of Mr FULTON

TO complement the already existing home at canal bank

Maybe the boys were on a separate census in 1901

That is a typical example of Anc* *****ing up a transcription. According to the Scotland's People index that Elizabeth McFarlane was 11 years old, not 119.

NEVER, EVER trust anything you find on Anc* (or any other commercial web site) unless it's an image of an original. ALWAYS check the original document to correct the myriad of errors and mistranscriptions for which they are notorious.

On the original there's been an error in the girl's ages by the enumerator (the mistake obviously struck through) and they are recorded as:

Elizabeth 11 9
Maggie 9 6

I can't find my files on Rockville just now but many years ago I researched it.  Rockville was named after the hamlet of Rockville on the Solway Coast as it was the home / holiday home of the Minister who came from there to Saltcoats.  I believe his home ( a manse ) was the original Rockville House named by him and just off Parkend Road high above Canal Street.
His name will come back to me but he was World Famous for his books on Seaweed Varieties and I think also  on Crustaceans found on Scottish Beaches.
My home towns are Ardrossan, Saltcoats & Stevenston ( the 3Toons )

The Reverend David Landsborough - the Seaweed Expert, named his residence in Saltcoats 'Rockville'.
I believe his sister was also a prominent researcher and writer.

He also wrote a book about the Isle of Arran but helped to make Saltcoats famous, cheers, Ian

There was a radio programme about seaweed last week.
There are some Landsborough street names in Saltcoats and Kilmarnock.

His sons and grandsons named David were all famous in one regard or another... one as an explorer in Australia and Taiwan, others as Protestant Ministers and Landsborough Churches were named in his honour.   He was famous as a Poet, Author and Biologist.
His list of publications is very numerous as you will see by Googling him.
