Mary Hall
« on: Monday 16 May 22 01:45 BST (UK) »
Good Morning all, another ancestor I am having trouble in finding is a Mary Hall who married a Samuel Lake on the 1/2/1726 Crediton in Devonshire, he was born/baptised on the 19/7/1697 Crediton and died on the 30/1/1768 Crediton Devonshire. I have searched FreeReg, Family Search etc, with no luck, just making sure on their records. :-[

Regards,
Janet :-\

What were the names of their children?
It may give a clue to Mary's father's name.
Have you seen the pages on The Friends of Devon Archives site?
foda.org.uk

Samuel Lake is listed on the 1723 Loyalty Oath, at Crediton.
There are no Hall names listed for Crediton, but if you go to 'Surnames Index', there are quite a lot of Hall families..

To save confusion for others - Mary Green, daughter of Roger and Dorothy Green was baptised on 19 September 1739 (not 1759) at Great Torrington.   ;)
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

And I'm sorry that I can't seem to help further in your quest.

Samuel and Mary Hall had several other children baptised at Crediton.
Elizabeth baptised 6.12.1730.
It looks as if she was buried 1.8.1734.
Unfortunately the vicar of Crediton gives very little information in these registers. No ages given, or even if the burials were children, or their parents' names.
But this Elizabeth must have died, as another Elizabeth was baptised to Samuel and Mary 15.6.1735.
Joshua was baptised to them 28.8.1737. It looks as if he was buried 25.3.1740. (There is also an entry for a Joshua for 1770 but this is a mis-trancription of the date).
Rebeckah was baptised 9.3.1739, buried 25.4.1742.
(There is also a 'Robert' indexed for the same date - 9.3.1739, but if you look at the original entry, this is a mis-transcription of Rebeckah. So no twin brother for Rebeckah).
Mary was baptised 4.9.1745, and looks as if she was buried 18.2.1745. (February 1742 would come after September 1742 at this point in time, the new year starting in April).

There are quite a lot of 'Lake' baptisms and burials in the Crediton registers, so some of these names may lead you further back.

They didn't have  much luck did they will their children?
You're lucky their son Samuel made it to adulthood.

However, it does you give you some names which you might be able to relate back to the previous generation, either for Samuel's parents, or Mary Halls'.

Several of these names are interesting.
Samuel, Joshua and Rebeckah are quite unusual biblical names, and it sounds as if there may have been some non-conformist association.
