Ancestry - Ethnicity Inheritance - Confused!
« on: Monday 16 May 22 21:08 BST (UK) »
Just been looking at the new Ethnicity Inheritance SideView on Ancestry to work out which parent is which and finding it very confusing!

Both parents have had their DNA tested on Ancestry.

Results as follows:

                                    Me      P1     P2     Dad   Mum
England & NW Europe      66%    32%  34%  84%  82%
Scotland                         21%    15%    6%    8%    6%
Sweden & Denmark           8%       1%   7%    2%    4%
Ireland                            5%        2%   3%    3%    4%
Norway                            -           -       -       -        3%
Wales                              -           -       -        3%    1%

Can't get the above to line up so have added an image of the info below…

Can't work out which parent is which!
Surprised at the percentages inherited from my parents, but I guess it's possible as inherited DNA is fairly random. Just a little surprised at how the weighting for different areas has shifted so much.

Haven't fully got my head around DNA and how it's passed on and I know Ancestry keep changing the regions and percentages, but how accurate is SideView? Is it just a guesstimate?

Is it just a guesstimate?

yes, Although I believe they have been using information that each user provides when they identify relationships from their list of matches and it is this self supplied information which is used to calculate the sideview information.

As to the whole ethnicity question - think yourself lucky if they got the right continent.
