1841 Wokingham lookup DEHAY
« on: Sunday 04 September 05 16:18 BST (UK) »
Could SKS find the DEHAY family on the 1841 census please?  The family seem to have been there for some years and in 1851 they were as follows:

In 1851: Market Place, Wokingham.  H0107/ 1693 f. 192 p 7 District 8a
James DEHAY (sp DELRAY) 77 General Practitioner in Medicine for 55 years born London, MDX
Mary DEHAY wife born South Moreton, Berkshire
Amelia DEHAY daur unm 28 born Wokingham, Berks

Possibly Thomas and other children with them in 1841

The name is often misspelt: DEHAYS/ DEHAYES were later corruptions.  In 1841, it should be DEHAY though.

Any help would be gratefully received.
Cheers
Lou

Lou,

The 1841 images for Wokingham are particularly difficult to read (some are unreadable).  That said I have just been through the lot and I cannot find your family, strangely the best images are for Market Place.

Sorry
Harry

I really do appreciate the time and effort you have spent looking: thank you so much.   James DEHAY was a surgeon and also had a house in Yateley but not as late as 1841 I am told (the Yateley Society have been helpful).   He was surgeon at the Wallingford Work House too for a number of years.  His children were all born in Wokingham.  I wonder!   Back to the drawing board, I think!

Thanks once again.

Harry, could you check Market Street again and tell me if there are ANY surgeons/ doctors and grocers there?  These were the two trades.  There are around 8 DEHAYs in Market Street and they were definitely all born in Wokingham too and were there through until 1881 and beyond.  I rechecked the 1851 and realised that they were wrongly listed as DELRAY.

I'd appreciate any time you could give this, once again!   Thank you.
