Henfynyw/ Aberayron WILLIAMS
« on: Monday 23 May 22 21:49 BST (UK) »
Hello  :) I am looking to find out more about Jenkins Williams, father of David Williams, who died at sea in 1869.  It would be great to find out more about his family, his wife and circumstances.  Details gleaned from Ancestry:
Son  - David Williams b. Oct 1861 Aberayron d. Dec 1935 Aberayron - fireman and hairdresser
(Also Evan, also a fireman)
Wife (?) - Margaret James b. 1825 Henfynyw pre-deceased Jenkin
Jenkin - b. 1820 Henfynyw
Any other information about David and his family would also be welcome.
Many thanks

This is most intriguing.

Apart from the statement in the 1889 Probate index that Jenkin “died at sea on 19 March 1869”, do you have any other source(s) to validate this?

I ask this because, as yet, I have not come across any mention of his death in the ‘Deaths at Sea’ registers in Ancestry. Additionally, in the GRO index the only Jenkin Williams death in 1869 was the one registered in Manchester in quarter 1 - although his recorded age of 46 does look promising.

Further, I have not found any mention of his demise at sea (or elsewhere) in Welsh Newspapers Online - which is a bit of a surprise given that it is something that I would very much have expected to see in an Aberayron maritime coverage context.

The only Jenkin Williams marriage in Cardigan with Margaret on the same page is this one & she was Margaret Owens

March qtr 1849 Aberayron   27 7

If Margaret pre-deceased Jenkin & David was only born October 1861 - they cannot be together in 1861 so where did you get her details from?  Where is David in 1871?

This Margaret's father was John Owens, a labourer.

Jenkin's father was John Williams, a farmer.

Jenkin is listed as a mariner. Both he and Margaret were of full age and both were single on the marriage cert.

there's an entry on the Welsh Mariners site for Jenkin Williams. His ship, the Atlantic, was lost with all hands 19 March 1869. His son, John 19, was also on board. He was late of Ffosyffin Cottage, Henfynyw, and Admon of his estate in 1889 was to a son Evan Williams, Fire Station, Southwark Bridge.

I saw a burial for Margaret of Ffosyffyn when I was looking before.

I'll get it up again.

Henfynyw

29 May 1867 Margaret Williams, Ffosffin, aged 43

Add - I see from that index, ref by osprey,  that there is an MI to Jenkin in  Henfynyw churchyard.
