Thomas Stone/Edmunds 1881 onwards?
« on: Tuesday 24 May 22 16:26 BST (UK) »
Hello

Looking for some help in tracing Thomas Stone in censuses 1881 onward. He was the illegitimate son of Margaret Stone of Carway Farm, born 1856, Llangendeirne

STONE, THOMAS (no mother's maiden name given i.e. Illegitimate)  GRO Reference: 1856  M Quarter in CARMARTHEN  Volume 11A  Page 565

In 1861 and 1871 he is living with his grandparents Charles and Jane Stone at Carway, together with his illegitimate brother David Stone (1857)

He is alive in Mar 1881 as he and his brother are mentioned as sons of Margaret in the will of his grandfather Charles Stone. I can't find an obvious death for him 1881-1891 so he must be out there somewhere!

(His brother David ends up living with his mother Margaret and her husband Edward Edmunds in Monmouthsire but no sign of Thomas. David "adopts" the surname Edmunds from then on. Margaret dies 1891 and in 1894 Edward and children emigrate to America. David must go separately as he dies in Allegheny, Pennsylvania in 1943).

So, following his brother David's example, there is the possibility that he could be in records as Thomas Stone or Thomas Edmunds.

There is a Thomas Stone who married a Jane Thomas but he was born 1853, Llanelly to John Stone and Anne Morgans.

There is a Thomas Edmunds born 1856 a mariner, but he was the son of Henry Edmunds and Mary Price.

So, I am a bit stumped at the moment. There is the possibility he may have emigrated like his brother but I have not found any evidence of this so far.

Thank you

Hello :-)

Looks to me like Thomas was still alive in 1922 ?

PASSPORT 1922
When David Edmunds applied for his passport in 1922 on 15 April 1922
* Born Wales 25 March 1857
* Father Edward Edmunds (deceased) was born In Wales
* Immigrated 1891, and resided uninterrupted from 1891 to 1922 in PA
* Naturalised 20 Jan 1898, PA
* Occupation: Machinist, Lives in Pittsburgh PA.
* Going to Great Britain, Pleasure trip, less than 3 months, departing New York 7 June 1922

MANIFEST 1922

SS  "Majestic", departed New York.  Arrived Southampton 14 July 1922
32. David EDMUNDS, 65, Machinist, going to 69 Glenelly Road, Llanhelly, South Wales,
33. Thomas EDMUNDS 65, Tin Worker, Ansonia House, Glenelly Road, LLanhelly

They were pretty close in age, the two brothers?  Which would explain both being "65".  Unless Thomas here at age 65 in an error - because I know David had a son named Thomas C.....

Here's David, returning to the US in 1922:
SS "Majestic" Departed Southampton, 6 Sep 1922, Arrived 13 Sep 1922 New York
David EDMUNDS, 65, Machinist, UK Address: 69 Glenala Road, Llanelly, S Wales
Returning to 599 Blessing St, Pittsburgh

The correct address is 69 Glenalla, Llanelli  ( Llanelly)
This is the address of:  Charles Stone

PROBATE:
Charles STONE of Glanrhyd, 69 Glenalla Rd, Llanelly, Carmethenshire, died 4 Aug 1934.
Probate London 15 Dec to widow Catherine Stone, widow, Effects £891, 7s, 2d

This is Charles & Catherine's burial/Headstone:

Have you got the exact birth date of Thomas? To help with possible identification ...

Hi Ambly

Thank you, great work. Presumably Thomas may have initially emigrated around the same time as his brother (or even before and David joined him) as I can’t obviously find him in UK censuses, but it looks like he also adopted the surname Edmunds.

I don’t have an exact DOB for Thomas but looking in the GRO I think I have found him born Mar Qtr 1856 so born either towards the end of 1855 or in the first Qtr of 1856, so them having the same age in the ships manifest could explained by the closeness of their birth years.

The Charles Stone you have is not David’s grandfather it is his cousin/half cousin. Charles Stone ‘snr” of Carway (1808-1881) had a son David Stone (1829-1910) who had a son Charles Stone (1858-1934) who married a Catherine Williams. Nice to know they kept in touch, their birth years are so close (1856/1857/1858) they must have known each other well growing up together.

Another child of Charles Stone “snr” Jane Stone (1841-1925) who married a Henry Michael also emigrated, sometime after 1871, soperhaps she paved the way for Thomas and David to join her

He is certainly elusive, as Stone or Edmunds!

I did find a baptism which you may already have

Parish of Pembry, Carmathen
Thomas Stone, baptised 1 July 1856
Mother, Margaret Stone, of Trigoch, Single Woman
