Help finding John Coleman born 1845 Knocknahur Sligo
« on: Friday 03 June 22 14:18 BST (UK) »
My ancestor lived in Willington Quay in what was then Northumberland, he died in 1915 in the Tynemouth Workhouse Infirmary  and he was also there in 1911 where he gave his place of birth as Knocknahur, Sligo.
I have a marriage certificate from 1869 in Hartlepool which I believe  may be for  him in which he gives his father's name as Micheal Coleman, a Hawker.
Would anyone be kind enough to suggest how I may find more about his origins. His wife Mary Anne  Dixon may have also been from Sligo but I am not sure.

Knocknahur townland:

did John have many children? often naming patterns could give more information. if you list them I’d be happy to have a look. also had a look for michael coleman death certs but couldn’t see much.

maybe also give all details on 1869 marriage cert. will also have a look at land records and newspaper records. (which are free on findmypast at the moment so you could also have a look yourself)

Here is a link to the discussion on the marriage

The children were  Samuel Dixon (I believe named after his wife's father)
Catherine Dixon, John, Mary Anne, John, and James. Both the Johns as well as Samuel  died in infancy.

This from 1861 census, Knaresborough. Michael Coleman, licensed Hawker & family.

1881 census for Michael (Unlikely to be same one)

Children on 1861 census have MMN of Lemmon & Kelley or Kelly for the younger ones

1881 census, Knaresborough for Ann & some of children. Son Michael is a hawker. Ann listed as a widow.

There is a death of a Michael Coleman in Knaresborough, 1865, age 44.

Thank  you for looking. The place of birth being Sligo and the family names suggest this could be the one. I have also found a 1851 census for him in Knaresborough and a 1861 for Leicestershire. I am wondering if John may have travelled to England as a child as it seems some of Micheal's other children were born there. According to my records he was definitely a roman catholic.

Also I am looking at John's wife Mary Anne Dixon, she died in 1883 so unfortunately all I have on her place of birth is "Ireland" off the census.  It seem this was a fairly common name and I am not getting anywhere. If I have the correct marriage certificate  and they married in Hartlepool the only evidence of her being from Ireland is the census enumerator's guess?

Does the marriage not give the name and occupation of Mary Anne Dixon's father?
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Who were the witnesses on the 1869 marriage cert?
