Looking for Robert Acton
« on: Monday 06 June 22 15:09 BST (UK) »
I am struggling to find Robert Acton on either the 1871 or 1881 census or even to pin down his birth on the GRO to get his mother's maiden name.

This is what I know. He died of typhoid fever on 31st Oct 1895 in Alderley, Cheshire. He was 27 years old and his wife, Annie, was present at the death. So he would have been born c.1868. He was buried in the church yard at St John's Church, Lindow.

He married Annie Priestner on 27th Feb 1891 at Witton-cum-Twambrooks, Northwich. He was 23 years old so that ties in with an 1868 birth year. His father is James Acton. His birth place is given as Macclesfield.

Robert and Annie appear on the 1891 census (RG12/2821/61 page 30) living at Sandy Lane, Morley, Pownall Fee in the district of Wilmslow. His occupation is farmer's son.

They had 2 children: John born 2nd qtr 1891 and Emma born 1st qtr 1893, both registered Altrincham. In 1901, Annie is living off her own means at Water Lane, Wilmslow with the 2 children and 2 boarders (RG13/3319/138 page 33).

This should be a straight forward search but I am not doing very well with it so any help would be appreciated please.

His father is James Acton

James Acton, Fireman

The address Robert & Annie both give on marriage in 1891 is 74 Solvay Road.

There is a James Acton, Boiler Fireman (at a stationary Engine at alkali works) at that address in 1901. Born Wilmslow circa 1842/3. Wife Amelia, son John 28 and Lydia 25 both born Macclesfield.

Thank you all. I think this is the correct family. Just checked the 1891 census again and where I have read "farmer's son" it isn't clear and could be "fireman's son".

The surname Boyle tells me this is right. The part of the tree I am working on has Boyles connected with Actons. I was going through a pile of documents I have been given and the only one that didn't fit was the 1895 death certificate for Robert Acton so I am trying to find out where he fits in.

Can't immediately see where but with the information you have given me I should be able to find the link.

Thanks once again. :D
