Dorothy Pringle
« on: Tuesday 07 June 22 01:17 BST (UK) »
Good Morning

I have a Dorothy Pringle married to a George Downey no date of marriage but probably around 1790. Dorothy is shown on the birth records of at least one child as being a native of Berwickshire. She is shown in the 1851 census of Northumberland as a widow aged 83 making her birth date around 1768.

Any one have Dorothy in their tree?

Regards

In 1851 her birthplace is given as Beadnell Northumberland but the 1841 for Northumberland shows her as "not born in county"

Thanks very much CaroleW for your reply and the info contained therein.

This is what is so puzzling.

There seems to be no indication that she was born in Scotland other than the birth record but neither so far have I been able to find a birth in Northumberland.

I will just keep casting the net wider hoping to snag something soon.

Thanks again

Gary

I cannot find a baptism for Dorothy in England or Scotland but in the process I noticed that some sites are not clear where Berwick on Tweed is located, example below

This on Ancestry not on Scotland’s People

A Joseph Pringle married Dorothy Dodds 22 Jun 1762
Berwick-Upon-Tweed, Northumberland, England

This on freereg
Dorothy PRINGLE Burial   15 Jun 1812   Northumberland   Berwick-Upon-Tweed : Holy Trinity. Age 69 (1743) widow of Joseph Pringle, Died 12th June. Late a Publican

I was unable to find any children for the above, there are a number of baptisms in Northumberland father Joseph but quite widespread and no mother noted.
There are two Military records on family search for two males born Berwick but not much help I’m afraid.

Maybe Dorothy was not baptised or the record has not survived?

Colin
Clarke, Trickett, Orton, Lawless, Norton, Detheridge, Kirby, Goodfellow, Wagstaff, Lowe, etc.

Perhaps not surprising, as it changed hands between Scotland and England many times.

However, according to Wikipedia, the last time it changed hands was in 1482, when it was captured by Richard of Gloucester and moved into England. As this is before the earliest record in any extant parish register in Scotland (1553), it suggests that 'sites' that think Berwick-on-Tweed is in Scotland are only about 500 years behind the times :)
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Thanks you to Forfarian, ColC and trish1120.

All of you have provided me with new avenues to search and hopefully I can move backwards in my search.

Forgive me if I have not replied correctly as I am new to this site.

Regards

Gary

You replied perfectly Gary :)

With going back to early 1700's it is a bit  difficult to find records that we can be sure are our ancestors.
With a couple of my family lines I gave up mid 1750's as I couldn't be completely sure I was on the right track.

Hi Trish

You are right about the difficulties of identifying rellies. When a relly has only one name like John it can be almost impossible to be sure which John is yours with any certainty.

I wish that more parents in the olden days would have used a number of christian names for their offspring, at least it would have reduced the possibles. My father and I have three christian names so at least researchers in the future will have it a bit easier.

One of my relatives is John Henderson and it is amazing how many John Hendersons there were in the 1851 census.

Life wasn't meant to be easy.

Thanks again for your post.

Regards

Gary
