George Fordyce Abt 1864 - 1936 - No birth or marriage record
« on: Saturday 11 June 22 15:50 BST (UK) »
I have been looking into to Fordyce side of the family after receiving a large family tree.
My 2nd Great-Grandfather is George Fordyce, Census from 1901 says he was born in Cullen about 1864. It also states he is married to Helen Beattie and has been for about 20 years, I can't find records on either. Based on his birth date, I found a death cert from 1936 with father listed as Peter Fordyce (as expected) but his is mother is listed as Jane Wilson and not Isabella McEwen (Peter's Wife from 1863).

I'm not sure if this is just an error on the death cert. With his birth and marriage not on Scotland's People, it makes me think they both might be out of Scotland.

Does anyone have an information on this family?

Thank you!

Welcome to RootsChat :)

George Fordyce Wilson, illegitimate son of Jean Wilson, was born in Cullen on 13 January 1864, exactly seven months to the day after Peter Fordyce married Isabella McEwen.

I presume you actually have the 1911 census, because the 1901 doesn't say how long a couple have been married?

In the 1901 census George W Fordyce and his wife Helen have four children, the eldest of whom was born in the United States and the rest in Marnoch. The birth certificates of the other three will tell you the date and place of the marriage.

FamilySearch has an index listing of a marriage of George Fordyce and Helen Beattie in Chicago on 25 September 1891.

In the 1871 and 1881 censuses, George Fordyce, born Cullen, is in the household of Robert Thomson, whose wife is Elizabeth Fordyce. In 1871 he is described as nephew.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

From the Chicago, Illinois marriage index, George and Helen married there on 25 Sep 1891.

Thank you so much for your help!

It was the 1911 census and that's the only way I knew they were married. I have now got a copy of the 1901 census but the handwriting is really hard to read for the ages but it looks like I'm on the right track.
I can't find a birth record of George (George and Helen's son) but even the year has been helpful.

I couldn't figure out why he was in the Thomson household but that makes sense.

Thank you again!
