I am researching a friend's family history and have come across a name for her 4GGM - Atterey/Atary/ Attra Meaden.   She married Edward Meaden in West Lulworth on 5 July 1803.   I have never come across the name before and was wondering whether anyone knew of its origins.

I have found a baptismal record that gives the name Aswry Travers (other transcriptions are Aturay and Athre).   Her parents were John and Elizabeth Trave(r)s.

TIA EM

Might it have been a surname used as a forename?  :-\

The 1803 marriage record clearly shows her name as Atuary (see below) but as she couldn't write her own name that is probably just a phonetic rendering.

In the 1841 census she is Attury.

There are few similar forenames in Lancashire around that time (Athery, Atary) and some in Dorset (Athry, Atiry) and Sussex (Athery, Atherry).

I think her Burial is on FreeREG as EDITH Meaden 25 Apr 1847 age 76 (1771)
(they must have had trouble transcribing name also!)
(GRO has her as Attra age 75)
Edward was buried 06 Aug 1847 age 85 (1762)

Trish :)
