Alice Dutton abt 1851 Birmingham
« on: Saturday 02 July 22 19:26 BST (UK) »
Need help to find out more about Alice Dutton born abt 1851 so Censuses say
She was  born in Birmingham abt 1851  and was with Alfred John Moss on 1891 census

Cant find marriage cert

They had  8 of his children

Most of the children I could find on GRO had mothers name Dutton

They lived mainly in South Wales but it looks like their first child was born Radstock Somerset Alfred Moss abt 1875
I cant find him or parents before 1891 when the family were living in Cwmdu Bridgend
Father John1853 Wiltshire  was a coal miner

Two Alice Duttons  were born around that time in Birmingham  one abt 1851 with mothers surname Albert which I believe was Allbutt

Edgar a gunmaker and Elizabeth Allbut Dutton lived in Birmingham but cant find them with children and I cant find the other one with mothers name Stone

She is with John Moss in all censuses - not Alfred John.  Alfred John was their son

1891 she is 36 - birthyear 1855

1901 she is 44 x birthyear 1857

1911 she is 59 - birthyear 1852

In 1891 there are 2 sons both called Alfred - aged 16 b Radstock & aged 6 b Mountain Ash.  Suspect one is an error

Strange - in 1881 there is an Alice Sutton b Birmingham 1849 living in Glamorgan with husband William.  Very poor quality image but one of her childrens births shows mmn Richards.  No Sutton/Richards marriage

I agree Edgar seemed a good bet for her father BUT an Alice Dutton aged 3 died in Dec.qtr.1854 Birmingham which I think is probably Edgar's daughter.  (Edgar a widower in 1861, no Alice with him, wife died 1852 and he remarried to a Jane Mary Box in 1862 and no Alice with them in 1871). The other Alice (b.1850 mmn Stone) I think could be the one who died Jun.qtr.1858 Birmingham aged 8.

Definitely something weird going on here.  Absence on 1881 census, no marriage, no birth entry for dau. Jane Maria.  No sign of Alice with surname Dutton in 1861 or 1871, no sign as Moss in 1881.

The 1911 was completed by the people themselves - not an enumerator - & shows Alice & John as married for 36yrs
