Help Identifying a blazer badge
« on: Thursday 07 July 22 03:01 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I wonder if anyone can help to identifying this blazer badge. It belonged to my grandfather. I know he was a Lance corporal in the Royal Armoured Corps during WWII, but is this related?
Or could it be for another regiment (he stayed in the military for many years after the war).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Best
Chris

The cipher in the middle of the badge appears to be the letters QOH, meaning that this might be the 4th Queens Own Hussars. QOH was one on the cavalry regiments which make up the Royal Armoured Corps. The motto would fit. However this is/was not the QOH capbadge as far as I can tell, so may be it was specific to their regimental association. Worth checking with the present day Association.

Invaluable information. Thanks chaps!

I was completely unable to read the letters in the middle, but you are right, now that you mention it they definitely are QOH.  ;D

Indeed, I knew my grandfather was or went on to be in a cavalry regiment, so this fits. I didn't know that he was one of "Churchill's Own" though. Interesting stuff.

I'd just like to figure out if this was before or after the war.

According to the link shared above, the "Regiment saw extensive action during the Second World War in Greece", which is where my grandfather was captured and became a POW (before escaping).
Perhaps he was already in the regiment at that time...

Anyway, thanks again. Much appreciated.

Definitely worth contacting the Regimental association, as even if he wasn't a member, they will have some details about his service. The fact he had the blazer suggests he was a member of the association however.

Good evening,

That is definately 4th hussars but not the usual blazer badge. See picture. The regtl cypher is used as an officers cap badge in the 4th and subsequently the QRIH and QRH.

It was also used on regtl sports medals such as football. I have some photo's to send to regtl headquarters in London so will query this as well. It is possible the football team had their own blazer badge.

PS. Wont let me attatch photo, will try again on pc.
