Tudor Merchants of Barbary
« on: Thursday 07 July 22 21:44 BST (UK) »
Augustine Lane, a sometime Muscovy (c.1560) and latterly Barbary Merchant* died before June 1595 (pcc will https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D931150 ). This was during the Anglo-Spanish War (1585–1604) and shortly before Drake & Hawkins tried to invade San Juan, Puerto Rico https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_San_Juan_(1595).

a) What were the circumstances of Augustine's death? natural or violence?
b) Are there any good books that deal with the Tudor Barbary Merchants?

* Slavery, both black and white, were core parts of the their trade.

It would seem that for the British at least, trade with Morocco was primarily the exchange of English cloth for sugar from Morocco, it being the main source of sugar before the Caribbean plantations were established

Lane is mentioned in this book:
Studies in Elizabethan Foreign Trade - Page 190
Thomas Stuart Willan · 1959
