Ghost in my alleyway
« on: Thursday 14 July 22 12:35 BST (UK) »
I went to a talk about Stoneygate spooky  stories and discovered there had been a murder in alleyway near my flat

So I googled it

http://www.blackkalendar.nl/c/27128/William%20Alfred%20Cowle

But the speaker didn't say who had implied it was haunted. I'd like to know more about the case and the people involved 18th may 1944

William Alfred Cowle

Nora Emily Paine

Why did they meet in Springfield road ? Was  it her address

# the executioner was famous too Albert Pierrepoint .( added)

my neighbour knew about this murder says the man was a doctor
and it was the bottom of the alleyway near the road+somepeople do say there is a ghost there .

other information from the talk by a blue badge guide was that
the man gave himself up straight away to the nearest policeman patrolling on london road.

he was hanged with another person the last double hanging in Leicester .

Quite a lot in the newspapers, including the Leicester Chronicle 3 June 1944 and the Leicester Evening Mail 24 July 1944.

William Alfred Cowle (31), a painter, of 47, Losinga-crescent, Mile Cross, Norwich.
There was an appeal, because of his mental state, but it was dismissed.

Nora Emily Payne, a 32 year old Leicester clerk in the Petroleum Board, daughter of Mr Frederick Payne, a retired railway clerk, of 7, Lytton-road, Clarendon Park.

The other man was William George Meffen (52), a ribber worker.

Thanks all I know LYTTON road so I can look at that address
I'll try and look at those newspaper reports as well next time I'm in the library today I was in Oadby and Oadby library is closed.

The other man who was executed had nothing to do with this case. I think it was  cheaper to execute two people at once.
