Date for Photo of Grandmother and her father and step Mum
« on: Thursday 14 July 22 17:47 BST (UK) »
Hi , is it possible to date this photo
grandmother born 1876 and great grandad born 1844 and step mum born 1848
the reverse was written on by my mother stating it was grandmas 21 st birthday.  that would have been 1897. i thought she looked too young in the photo

I think both the clothing and the photo back look more late 1880s than 1890s.

Do you have any ancestors who might fit a late 1880s date?

HI
I am thinking perhaps grandma would have been in her teens on the photo  that would be about between 1887 to 1894
it is genuinely my grandma  with her step mum. her real mum died 1879
i have now found another photo of  grandma also saying 21st birthday  and she looks a lot older that he photo i have posted.  i could try and post it but it is attached to glass so it might not scan

I've PMed Carol to see if she can have a look too.  Clothing is very much late 1880s.

I'll PM Jim as well.

Can you give the link to it on here and the link to this one on the other thread, otherwise you might get  duplication of comments.

Re the photgraphic studios

Quote
James Sunderland was a "photographic artist and fine art depository " at 67 bull St in 1874. By 1880 he had moved to 10, 50,51 Great Western Arcade, and was still there in 1884 (then also at 42 Booth st, handsworth). Sometime between then and 1888 it became Sunderland & Hudson, and they were that up to 1892. By 1895 they had disappeared. So picture would be between 1885 and 1894. If someone could toe down the wolves and dudley connection it might make it tighter.

I would agree with Gadget, the young girl only looks to be around 14 years old or thereabouts, and she has her hair down. Young ladies generally only put there hair up when they were of marriageable age, around 17 or 18.
