William Christie's Parents
« on: Monday 25 July 22 12:22 BST (UK) »
Hi,

My ggg-grandfather, William Christie was baptised at Inverarity, Angus on 15 July 1796. The record is on Findmypast. It says that his father was James Christie.

The record of his death, at Lochee, Angus on 6th Sep 1867, says that his mother was Margaret Mitchell.

I have found a couple of trees on Ancestry, which indicate that his parents had two other sons:

John Christie, baptised at Monikie in 1800 and David Chrystie, baptised at Murroes in 1807.

These trees think that James Christie was baptised at Monikie in 1777. They have no information about Margaret Mitchel(l), who is likely to have been about the same age.

There appear to be a few cases of Margaret Mitchel(l), in the area, who might be James' wife, but there is no sign of a marriage in records.

Any help in discovering her would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Gordon

The record is not on FindMyPast - what is on FindMyPast is an index listing. Forget about the commercial web sites like FindMyPast and Ancestry - go to the original sources at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk.

The index there shows that James Chr*stie and Margaret Mitchell had John, baptised in Monikie, and David in Murroes. The original baptism records may contain additional information, for example names of witnesses who may provide clues about the wider family.

There are several deaths of Christies with mother's maiden surname Mitchell and birth 1800 plus or minus 10 years.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Brilliant!

Using Scotland's People, I found that William's father was almost certainly James Christie, who was baptised at Newtyle in 1774. Their record shows that James' mother had the surname 'Taylor', which is significant, as one of William's daughters was Janet Taylor Christie.

William's mother, Margaret Mitchell, could well be the daughter of John Mitchell. Margaret was baptised at Kirriemuir in 1776.

Unfortunately, I believe that the earliest recorded Kirriemuir marriages, available, start around 1821. It seems probable that John Mitchell married Jean Howie (1745 - ), of Glamis, and Margaret Mitchell married James Christie, both marriages at Kirriemuir.

The eldest daughter of William Christie has the name Jean Howie Christie.

Thanks, enormously, for your suggestion!
