What happened to Caroline Winter, b.1851?
« on: Sunday 31 July 22 11:17 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I'm starting on this Pembrokeshire forum because that's where my 3xG Aunt Caroline Winter was born - in Narberth in 1851 - but if there's a more appropriate forum, moderators please move this.

Caroline WINTER appears with her family in Narberth on the 1851 Census as a 0 year old infant.
Her parents are William WINTER and Sarah Matilda (nee Rogers) - both born in Somerset. Five of her older siblings are still at home, four were visiting relatives or had left. (Four more were yet to be born).

I haven't found any mention of Caroline since.

She's not with her parents in the 1861 Census and I haven't yet found her with any of her many Aunts, Uncles or older siblings so far. (There are several of her maternal Aunts - Sarah Matilda Roger's siblings - and a few of her paternal Aunts and Uncles I haven't been able to trace though, mainly in Somerset).

If she died before 1861, I haven't come across any death records yet.

I've found one death index for a 20 yr old Caroline Winter in Southampton. The age matches, but I have no further details. Cannot find any of the other family in this area at the time, although that doesn't rule out employment as a possible reason for her being in Hampshire.

Any ideas?

Thank you Colin and Rosie,

No, that's not my Caroline then... Good to at least rule it out.

The two Winter deaths you mention Colin, are Caroline's brother Timothy and their father William.

Well that's interesting... I haven't yet come across an Ellen in any of my Winter families, so I wonder if Caroline is Ellen...

I know UK death certificates don't give much information, but would a child's one list one of the parents? Is it usually a parent as the informant for example?

Parents aren't named on a death certificate.  The informant is named and in the case of a child it is usually a parent or family member.

You can send off to the GRO for a pdf copy which will be emailed to you.  It costs £7
