Edward Hughes / Ellen Jones Flintshire
« on: Tuesday 02 August 22 21:08 BST (UK) »
Hi - I've been doing pretty well with my family history, mainly for England - But I have hit a huge brick wall for my paternal side! I got it completely wrong at one point so I had to re-do it, now it's so hard finding any links from any of the resources I have checked.

My great-grandfather was William Hughes (Just as I was writing this out, I have found there may be a discrepancy with his date of birth - Not year - b. 1878), he eventually moved to Widnes, Lancashire c. 1891 with both his parents, Edward Hughes and Ellen (Jones). William died 1953 in Widnes. I have not found any birth records at this moment for William.

On the Widnes 1939 census, William has a date of birth of 30th December 1878, I found no other dated-record for this - But as I didn't have a baptism record I just checked this for him - I found a record with matching parents for 11th July 1878 which matches up with their street address on an 18xx census.

Edward and Ellen are proving to be quite troublesome. I found a record for Edward Hughes of death in 1900, Prescot, however between the census' his age did vary. Ellen died in 1906 in Widnes - However I can find no burial record for her either nor cremation record - I can only assume she (Along with Edward?) came back home to Wales?

I have checked news articles on Find My Past and I have no hits for their names, under Flint nor Widnes.

1891 - 74 Dock Street, Widnes (Born Flint) - There is a separate piece of text AFTER Flint, but I can't make this out

-

1878 - 13 Evans Street, Flint (Born Mostyn)
1881 - 3 Barn Street, Widnes (Born Mostyn)

Welcome to Rootchat.
When Edward Hughes aged 24  marries Ellen Jones aged 20 on 28 Jul 1867 he states his father Richard is a Captain of vessel.

In 1871 13 Evans Street Flint.
Edward Hughes   28    Head
Ellen F Hughes   24    Wife
John Hughes   2    Son
William A Hughes 11 Months    Son

Baptism  at Flint
Name:    Edward Hughes
Record Type:    Baptism
Birth Date:    1842
Baptism Date:    8 Jan 1842
Baptism Place:    Flint, Flintshire, Wales
Father:    Richard Hughes Mariner
Mother:    Catherine Hughes

1851 Evans Lane Flint
Catherine Hughes 37 widow supported by parish b Barmouth
Griffith Hughes    13 b Flint
Edward Hughes   9 "
John Hughes   7 "
Richard Hughes 4 "
Mary Hughes    2 "

When their son Griffith Owen was baptised in Flint in 1838 the entry states she was formerly Owens and Richard is a mariner.
1841 Evans Square  Flint . Richard isn`t there.
Catherine Hughes   29
Ann Owens    15
Griffith Hughes    3

There is now this marriage. No occupation or ages  given and fathers not named.
Name:    Richard Hughes
Record Type:    Marriage
Marriage Date:    4 May 1836
Marriage Place:    Bagillt, Flintshire, Wales
Residence Place:    Beaumaris
Spouse:    Catherine Owens

If this is the right family then Richard Hughes died between 1848 and 1851 but we don`t have an age. Also Edward doesn`t state that his father is deceased when he marries.
I suppose that if you find the marriages of the children from 1851 it would be interesting to see what status they have their father as.

I think the 1861 census may be missing for this part of Flintshire.
