Help once again please Haddow Family
« on: Monday 05 September 05 15:32 BST (UK) »
I am still trying to find any info on the Haddow's who emigrated to New Zealand from Glasgow around 1898. They left after October1897 & don't appear on UK census returns 1901. Does anyone know the names of any ships that sailed to NZ from Glasgow around these times? I am thinking they went in 1898 as my Grandmother was named after her Aunt Matilda whom my Gt Grandmother knew she would never see again & my Grandmother was born November 1898
James Haddow born 1867 a widower, his sons
Hugh Davidson Haddow born 1893
Andrew Burton Haddow born 1895 & his sister
Matilda Adams Haddow born 1880.
Any Help or clues would be appreciated. I posted a topic a few months ago & learnt there are very few families named Haddow in the whole of New Zealand.
Many Thanks
  Sue

Hi sossle,

I can't find any record of any of those names. Are you sure they came to NZ, because they might have got off en route at an Australian port such as Melbourne.

I suggest you try writing to New Zealand HADDOW's to see if any are descendants. Kiwi's love family history and will readily respond if they see a connection, so make sure you provide as much information as possible going back several generations.

There is no complete list of ships entering NZ ports for any time period, I'm sorry to say.

The NZ government have never seen fit to publish census information in the UK format, so NZ genealogists (eventually, in my case) become very good at lateral thinking to further the hunt.

Cheers, riley

Hi Sue,

I was just browsing a list of NZ University graduates 1870-1938 and these names caught my eye:

HADDOW    Henry William Ughtred    Auckland    M.A. LL.B.    1921    HADDOW    Joseph George   Auckland    LL.B.    1909    .
HADDOW    Phyllis    Otago   M.B. Ch.B.    1923

They might be rellies!

Cheers,

Ros

PS Auckland and Otago were the names of the universities, not necessarily where they lived. Otago was the only place you could study medicine.

There's also:

PETTIT, William Haddow             M.B.,CH.B.  1909  28 (age)

Your Ughtred and Dr Phyllis Haddow were 2 of 12 children of Joseph Haddow and Sophie Haddow (Axon) originally of Manchester who immigrated to NZ 1891. Joseph came on  a ship called the Crusader, leaving the ship in Dunedin, and eventually finding work in Wanganui with the local newpaper. I am presently getting Josephs memoirs onto disc - no where can I recall him refering to Glasgow relatives. I found this site because as part of my copying I was interested in Phyllis Haddow who was a missionary doctor in Hong Kong so I placed her name in the search bar on google. And found your request!
Joseph was my great grandfather.

Hi, the Matilda adams harrow is my grandmother, she immigrated to Australia as an orphan aged 5, I never met her, as she passed away just before I was born.
I am have her birth extract as I am applying for a uk ancestry visa to do supply teaching in scotland come September 2014, will probably spend half the year teaching in scotland and the other half in nsw australia

I'm really sorry I cannot contact the person who posted this. I am writing a biography of William E.A. Axon (1846-1913) of Manchester, UK. Sophia Grace A Axon, his daughter, born 1867 in Manchester, is the Sophie referred to below. Her brother, Ernest C A Axon, in the late 1930s/1940s returned her letters sent to her family in Manchester as they comprised a full diary of the settlers' life. Later Joseph Haddow took up law. The Haddows were first based in Devonport, Auckland. One son was Humphrey Bentley who was in the army in WW1. I am so anxious to see the family letters and to trace if there are any living descendants. The direct Axon line died out in the UK but William E A Axon is important in Manchester history and as an author. If anyone has any information please contact me!
