Alfred HUGHES
« on: Monday 08 August 22 08:54 BST (UK) »
Greetings, my 2nd great-grand father Alfred Hughes

DOB1843– DOD 1903

BIRTH ABT. DEC 1843 • Parramatta, New South Wales, Australia

DEATH 22 APRIL 1903 • Cabramatta, Mt, Gravatt, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia

Alfred married Deborah Hayes/Train on 4 Dec 1877 • South Brisbane, Queensland, Australia

They had 4 children before he married Deborah, poor woman.

1871 birth daughter I can't find, I don't think she survived
1873 birth son  I can't find, I don't think he survived

I believe they were both born in Margaret Street, Brisbane.

OK down the issues:

When Alfred and Deborah married they both were widows.

Alfred came up from Paramatta Sydney, I can't find his first wife.

I would love to find the purchase of the land in Margaret Street Brisbane and Charlotte Street Brisbane where they had all things horse equipment shops and I think livery.

They eventually moved to Mt Gravatt and purchased a lot of land.

It is the beginning I am interested in.

How do you find out when someone arrived in QLD from NSW?
How do I find land purchases?
How do I find missing wives and if there were any other children?
I can't find Alfred's birth certificate no matter how much I try.

Many thanks Janice

Is this a brother of Alfreds?  If so, what information have you gleaned from his records.
I see his birth registered NSW 1841

I wonder if this is Alfred's first marriage.  :-\

876/1863 HUGHES ALFRED KING ELIZABETH SYDNEY

I think the term " about to leave the colony" in the newspaper article might apply to moving from NSW to Queensland (but other's more knowledgeable than me will confirm or refute)

Janice. You need to move the new post which you have put in General Useful Links.

It will do better on the Australian Board.
