Obituary Lawrence Laycock
« on: Saturday 13 August 22 11:31 BST (UK) »
Can anyone tell me if Keighley Library hold copies of newspapers from the turn of the century? I emailed them weeks ago and got no reply. I am looking for an obituary for Lawrence Laycock, a professional wrestler, who died in Keighley in 2000. Thanks for any help.

Are you sure of the date/place?
The death in 2000 is registered in North Yorkshire. There is a burial/gravestone in Kirkbymoorside.

Not absolutely sure, no. I don't have his death certificate but I thought as he did live in Keighley for some time their papers might have his obit. Maybe I should try a different library.

Thank you, yes I've seen those. I just don't seem to be finding any more and thought an obituary would help. He was illegitimate, that's clear from his marriage certificate and in 1939 he was living with his maternal grandmother, his mother having died.

Are you trying to find out about his wrestling career? You seem to know about his family.
In 1921, he is with the Barbers  and Annie Laycock.

1914 marriage Keighley
Annie Barber and George Laycock

1919 birth Keighley
Lawrence Laycock mother’s name Barber

There is a War death for George Laycock

Son of Edward Laycock; husband of Annie Laycock, of 7, Prospect Place, Halifax Rd., Keighley, Yorks. Born at Tadcaster, Yorks.

It looks as though Lawrence is illegitimate though as you say. George died April 1918 and Lawrence born in 1919.

Thank you very much heywood. I have followed the Barbers and I may have identified Lawrence's father. I was just hoping for an obituary. As far as I can find he had no children, although he was married, but no mention of a wife on the stone at Kirkbymoorside, so perhaps they weren't still together. Thank you for all your help.
