Mmm I think the clue is Ann Rodgers, Sister of William, as to a more accurate age for him.

F/S has;
Marriage 12 July 1845
Ayr, Ayrshire, Scotland, United Kingdom
James RODGERS to Ann REDDOCH

OOps just noticed Colin had posted this

Are you saying that Ann was married previously to a Kerr, and then after Mr Kerr died she remarried to James Rodgers?

James Rodgers married Ann KERR c 1833 and she died and he then married Ann REDDOCH 1845

Which brings us to this Census I posted earlier;

1871 Census
James Rodgars 69 Head
Ann Rodgars 68   Wife
William Ruddock 87 Brother-in-law born Ireland (1784)

So if this is your William and the transcript is correct (I cant acccess original) then Ann was William Sister and her Death Cert may be of help?

Hi, the marriage seems to have a transcription error, husband is actually Joseph Douglas but yes that's them. I must have accidentally typed in 1858 instead of 56, sorry.

I don't have any credits on SP at the moment, so can't get Ann's death certificate. Nor have I actually been able to find her death on SP.

Deaths recorded prior to 1855 are rare although you may find a record of a burial if you're lucky.

Statutory records for Births/Marriage/Deaths in Scotland began in 1855 & are full of useful info. which isn't recorded in any other years forward.

It's a known fact, ages on census' can often be out as many people were illiterate & guesses were made.

Death certs. are the most unreliable sources of ages as the info. is given by someone other than the subject themselves & often ages were a guess & names of parents a guess.

Who were the informants on the death certs. you have for the family to date?

It's always worth doing a timeline of events with notes of any discrepancies which makes it easier to work out true possibilities.
