The 1880 Lubeck census has just come up with Sophia Luth, date of birth 19 Nov 1808, same as earlier.

Just looking at a tree that has her death in 1891.  It has a whole lot of information including her remarriage to Carl Luth in 1845 and births of other children.

Have sent PM.  Tree says he was still in Germany in 1862.

Looking at all the details in that tree, John's father married in Denmark, only a year before his marriage to John's mother. No death recorded for her.

But he also has some details of John's death on board ship, off Madeira, but again no proof.

No death recorded for her.

No there isn't but she is down as a widow on Denmark census 1850 age 42.
She is on 1860 census too.

And 1845 as wife with Joachim Frederik Kalias age 39 born Lubok so the plot thickens........it can't be the same person if he is supposed to have died in 1843.

The tree says son John died Antwerp so we are all over the world with this one.

Following up the Antwerp reference there is a J Kailas age 43 who died 10 April 1883 at sea.

Vessel name Darien. Death place says Hpl Antwerp, don't know if that means hospital?

Cause of death column has small pox and " for everyone on the list.

Original record gives his rating as Carptr so that fits with the vessel records found earlier (if this is the right man)

Thanks Millipede, i have seen 2 possible deaths now, one is the Antwerp one in 1883, the other off the coast of Madeira. Hoping the tree owner can help, though no sources on his tree. Will update you if i hear.

All very confusing, but intriguing. Think i'll sleep on it and see if anything is clearer in the the morning. Thanks for your help today. Tried sending you a clip from his other tree with the Madeira death details, no source, but i couldn't attach it.

Edited to add: surely there must be 2 of the same name confusing the issue, despite the Denmark marriage saying he was from Lubeck in Germany.

Hi - I have been puzzled by the 2 Nicolaus Jochim Friedrich Kalies  ( my gg grandfather) - 1 Denmark and 1 in Lubeck for many years and cannot reconcile this at all. I have accepted he lead a double life.
I have the death notification of Johann Kalies in "UK, Foreign and Overseas Registers of British Subjects, 1628-1969" record from port of Antwerp, Belgium. The record is on my family tree (please ask and I will give access). Madeira may have come from me a few years ago. I dont believe this is accurate now.
