Birmingham St Phillips Request
« on: Wednesday 17 August 22 14:17 BST (UK) »
So long story short, I'm trying to find the source of a date of birth of my ancestor Jeremiah Howell, a convict sent to Tasmania. All across the internet many people have his DOB as 11 June 1826, but none a provided a direct source. I actually found what may appear to be an answer. After a quick google search a found an online tree that sources a letter from the 1980s by a genealogist. Said genealogist stated that he found the baptism in the parish records of St Philips, Birmingham.
Trying to validate their claim, as they fail to provide a baptism date. Also according to other records Jeremiah Howell was born c. 1826 in Bath/Holloway in Somerset, so the fact this genealogist found a baptism in Warwickshire raises question if correct. Hoping someone can help.

Parish registers are online apparently:

Have you got all of his convict related papers from the Australian end?

Parish registers are online apparently:
https://www.familysearch.org/en/wiki/Birmingham_St_Philip,_Warwickshire_Genealogy

They are only viewable online at a Family History Centre as far as I can make out.
https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/317126?availability=Family%20History%20Library

However there is a surname search facility on that page and I can't see anything coming up for a Jeremiah Howell in 1826  :-\

That’s correct my Jeremiah Howell was sent on the Earl Grey and convicted on the 14th of June 1842. Parents aren’t named on his convict indent. It does name two brothers, Samuel and Edward but I haven’t had too much luck.

I found these two chaps via the census records but neither has the same father so that hasn’t helped me.
I chased up a Samuel Howell who married a Harriet White in Bath in 1853, father was a Jeremiah Howell, occupation Mason.
Found a marriage for an Edward Howell in 1837 to an Eliza Weaver, father Edward Howell Carpenter.

Also here is the link to the supposed transcript I found of the genealogist letter. https://www.genealogy.com/ftm/a/r/n/Nikki-Arnott/WEBSITE-0001/UHP-1554.html

Apologies I don't have a subscription to read the entire articles

Bath Chronicle and Weekly Gazette dated 2 December 1841 -Jeremiah Howell, Thomas Matthews and a girl named Ann Diamond .... stealing

That must be the one he got 2 months for.

Bath Chronicle and Weekly Gazette dated 12 May 1842 .. Jeremiah Howell and Win Russell stealing a hat from a shop door on Stall Street............

This one has to be for his 10 year transportation.

What about his marriage - does that have any parents mentioned?

The 1841 census if correct says born in country - Somerset.

Funeral notice says a native of Bath England.
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos
