Richard Thomas Burgess - a mystery man!
« on: Wednesday 17 August 22 18:27 BST (UK) »
Hi all, I’m researching my step-granddad’s family and have just had the worst luck with finding the family of his great-grandfather, Richard Thomas Burgess.

Concrete information I have is he was born around 1851 (most likely in London as that’s what he states on census records). He married Florence Annie Beesley in September 1877 in St Thomas, Oxford. In 1881 they are living at Upper Fisher Row in Oxford. Richard was a farrier. Richard and Florence had 8 children all born in Oxford - Alice Florence (b. 1879), Arnold Richard Wimbold(?) (b. 1880), Richard Samuel (b. 1885, my step-grandad’s grandfather), Alexander William (b. 1886), Florence Alethea (b. 1889), Reginald Herbert (b. 1892), Aubrey Henry (b. 1894), and Ruby Hilda (b. 1895).

The only mention of Richard’s father I have been able to find is on a marriage bann record, which states his father name was Arnold Wimbold Burgess, a farrier. This makes sense as it’s the name of his first son and the same occupation. However I haven’t been able to find anything on Arnold, or anything on Richard’s mother. Family are possibly from London. I assume Wimbold is the maiden name of a mother or grandmother or something along those lines but I haven’t been able to find anything. I’ve attached the marriage record as I’m worried that maybe I’m reading it wrong? It’s just frustrating to look for so long and still come up with nothing!

Any and all help is greatly greatly appreciated here as my granddad knows nothing of this side of his family. Thank you all so much!

Clever Heywood!

The R & B of the signatures in the two marriages are very alike.

This seems very very possible but the middle name is different for Richard :/

The surname is too - perhaps, if it is him, he had something to hide.

It needs to be checked out in later censuses. I couldn’t find wife Julia Maria Hawgood anywhere either.
