I have attached an image of the monogram, with each letter coloured differently. Each of the letters is stylistic  - that is to say that it should make a pleasing image, rather than being easy to read.
I think that the letters are -

Orange - The letter I (or maybe J, cut short to fit)

Red - The letter W (note that the top has been closed, so it is possible that it is the letter B, turned on its side)

Yellow - The letter S (but the central, horizontal section, is very fat)

Blue - On its own it is no letter, but adding the central, horizontal section of the S makes it an A.  Or if it is upside down the letter V

So, I/J, W/B, S and A/V.

This really puts us no further forward. Any one of those letters could be the first letter of the surname, except possibly V (if it is one).

I think, a look in "Fairbairn's book of crests" would be useful. Find the crest and make a note of all the surnames.

Do likewise with a Google search of "Family Mottoes". See if you can match the monogram, with the motto and the crest.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

Thank you so much for the detailed answer, I could make out some letters but not all. I'll check the book you mention, it'll be interesting to see if I can find it.
