Heads Family in Durham
« on: Thursday 18 August 22 10:45 BST (UK) »
Hello, Is anyone able to confirm for me a marriage in Whickam in about 1760 between a man called George HEADS and a woman whose surname was CHARLTON.  If so, does the entry say where each of them was from? Thank you.

Durham Records Online has Whickham St Mary marriages from 1579 to 1891, but there is no record of a George Heads/Charlton marriage.

Thank you both for these replies. Ann Charlton looks promising, but the date and the location are dubious. I, too, have checked Durham Records Online without success, hence my post here. I have seen the alleged marriage of these two people in Whickham on online trees, but they have no source - none at all. Maybe someone reading this will be in a position to look at the Whickham registers. Maybe someone reading this will be connected to these two people!  I live in hope  :)

Herbert Maxwell Wood was certainly in a position to look at the Registers
and he agrees with Durham Records Online - there was NO marriage in Whickham Parish for a George Heads between 1579-1812.

Available to view here :

"Heads" entries in the index are on page 186 of 208, shows an Elizabeth, a couple of Johns and a William, definitely no George

Have you asked the tree owners what their source for this (very vague) entry is?

Hello everyone, thanks for the replies. No, I don't know about any children. My problem is I believe this George Heads married a different woman, in the 1760s, and the trees I've seen have some very strange combinations of children as a result of the alleged marriage to the woman called Charlton. So I can't really say for certain. I can't contact the owners of the trees because the subscription I'm using to look at these sites is not my own.

To help things along, I believe the George Heads chr 1736 at Medomsley [which these trees and I DO agree on] married a woman called Elizabeth Proud on Feb 14 1765 at Lanchester. He was of Satley and she was otp [Lanchester].  I would respectfully ask the local RootsChat respondents if it would be unlikely for someone originally from Medomsley to be living in Satley when he married someone in Lanchester? Looking at the map, they don't seem too far apart to me.

Children born to them can be found as follows: 1765 Dorothy / 1768 Thomas / 1772 Margaret / 1773 Dinah / 1776 John / 1779 Elizabeth. All sourced on either or both FindMyPast or Durham Records Online. Dorothy, Thomas, Margaret & Elizabeth all have a mother called Elizabeth.

Thank you for the link to the Whickham PR. It certainly confirmed that nobody called George Heads married someone called Anne Isabella Charlton in that parish on Sept 2 1759.
