No death record offered for his first wife (Christiane Friedericke Kühnel)

I don´t think she died.
Here she is in the 1860 Census

Thanks Dave, that’s really helpful. Think it confirms that there were 2 men of very similar names (even if both from Lubeck), one marrying in Copenhagen the other in Lubeck. Thanks for your help. Deirdre

so going through the online records again (will try and add links)

7 Feb 1834 - Nicolaus Jochim Friederich Klies, born Lubeck, 19 Aug 1806 (parents Nicolaus Heinrich Klies and Marie Dorothea Koch) married Christiane Friedericke Kuhnel at Sankt Petri, Kobenhavn, Kobenhavn, Denmark

31 May 1835 - Nicolaus Jochim Friedrich Kalies, born Lubeck, 19 Aug 1806 (parents Nicolaus Hinrich Kalies and Maria Dorothea Kalies), married Margaretha Sophia Hamelau at Schlutup, Lübeck, Deutschland (Germany)
link was too long to post

This certainly looks like the same man  ???
