Llanbedr baptisms post 1812
« on: Tuesday 23 August 22 19:49 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I have some baptism dates for various Evans from Llanbedr (eg Francis 13th July 1817), but I can't remember where I got them from and have carelessly not recorded their provenance and when I have checked online it appears that there are no baptisms after 1812, so is that correct?

The baptisms don't seem to be online.

Interestingly, I have a DNA match with one of the people who have Francis on her tree, although via a different branch.

I am not sure about Llanbedr, but I have found most Merionethshire baptisms at the Dolgellau Record Office or at the National Library in Aberystwyth. If I remember correctly, the latter is better for Bishops' Transcripts.

This is the reply from Gwynedd archives, so I'll have to visit to find out more

Could they have merged with Llandanwg … this parish which includes Harlech meanders down the coast quite a way .   Also there is a substantial non-conformist community on the Merioneth coastline … my family were Scottish baptists from there .   If you are able to go to Merioneth there is a large amount of both Parish and non conformist registers.   They are extremely helpful on the phone .   I believe they are open Monday and Tuesday

I checked Llandanwg when Nigel first put up the request.  A quick look didn't show anything.

I've tried to go through the images for Llandanwg in detail, for the 1817 +/- period,  but they seem to be virtually unreadable mixed records from much earlier -  e.g 1693.

As Llanbedr is....

is a curacy annexed to the rectory of Llandanwg

.....it's records might also be in a similar state.

I've had this reply from the Gwynned archives, so it looks like a visit to Llanbedr is needed.

I’m afraid it’s not good news. We only have a few registers for Llanbedr parish; the later ones have not been deposited in the archives and one can only hope that they are still in the church and not lost or destroyed.

It might be worth contacting the National Library. I had the same problem with Llanaber, for which there are no parish registers before 1750, but there are a few BTs.

I headed over to the NLW pre Covid one Saturday … really struggled to get hold of BTs of there and Criccieth … staff didn’t really know how to help.   I’d had the information from there many many years ago but at that time being a very inexperienced researcher I hadn’t put the source material down other than jotting BTs !  My recommendation is to take a trip down there during the week where you gave the chance of hanging more experienced staff.
